Job Description

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION PURPOSE OF ROLE:

This position provides quality leadership for a plant by setting the quality strategy, improving quality standards, goals, and objectives. This position will focus mainly on the operations side of quality assurance; Quality Systems, Food Safety and the appropriate food safety systems, Sanitation, and Specifications. The Quality Manager monitors and advises on how the quality management system performs, publishes data and reports company performance against set KPI. The Quality Manager advises on changes in quality procedures and systems, implements new systems, where necessary, and provides training, tools, and techniques to enable others to achieve quality.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage all food safety programs.
  • Manage all master sanitation plans.
  • HAACP
  • Lead food safety certification efforts (FSMA, SQF, BRC, etc.)
  • Manage all quality programs from incoming ingredients, in process checks, and finished product tests.
  • Provide training for all QA, food safety, and sanitation programs.
  • Responsible for ensuring all specifications and formulas are current.
  • Point person for all quality, regulatory reviews.
  • Directs and schedules work.
  • Make timely decisions using sound and accurate judgment while keeping appropriate people informed in the decision process.
  • Effectively manage plant quality staff through ensuring appropriate staffing, providing formal and informal evaluations/feedback, addressing employee issues when warranted and providing appropriate training and mentoring.
  • Participate in audits, new product start-up and developing specialized customer requirements where applicable.
  • Assist with standardization and refinement of daily operational processes.
  • Consistent reinforcement of quality practices throughout the organization.
  • Consumer complaint investigation and follow up.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Will be required to travel 10% of the time.
  • Bachelor degree in Food Science or a relevant technical filed. (i.e. Engineering, Biology, Microbiology or chemistry).
  • 5+ years of experience in the food industry (Product Development, Process Development, Quality Assurance or appropriate Engineering).
  • 3+ years of direct plant experience.
  • Effective problem solving capabilities and interpersonal skills essential. Ability to effectively lead and develop a team with various experience levels.
  • Good computer skills, including the ability to use software for data analysis, word processing and presentation.

PREFERRED SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Processing/Packaging experience desirable: Dry blending, wet blending, extrusion, drying, and coating.
  • Statistical process control (SPC) knowledge is desirable. Understanding and use of MiniTab is desirable.

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum bachelor degree in Food Science or a relevant technical filed. (i.e. Engineering, Biology, Microbiology or chemistry).
