Job Summary

Responsible for setting strategies, developing, managing and assuring compliance with food safety policies and procedures company wide, across vendors, distribution and retail locations. Partners across functions on food offerings within Owned Brands, and National Brands. Establishes center of expertise and manages Food Safety team. Decisions have a moderate to significant impact on the short-term and/or long-term results for specified area of work, specific customers and/or stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs as Food Safety subject matter expert for the company, driving policies and education at all levels of the organization.
  • Manages other Product Integrity programs as assigned by the Director to achieve companywide product quality and safety objectives.
  • Represents the company on external committees within area of expertise.
  • Establishes and maintains a written Food Safety program detailing minimum expectations for external and internal suppliers within Retail Operations, distribution centers, and supplier base. This includes but is not limited to food storage, handling, maintenance, and inventory.
  • Partners cross-functionally with Retail Operations and Retail HUB on food safety execution, guidance, training, communications, and escalations; Responsible for oversight of resolving escalations in a timely manner and providing support to Retail Operations as needed.
  • Develops, implements and maintains a supply chain risk assessment model with control points, to include manufacturing, shipping, warehousing, and point-of-sale for the company retail food operations and product selections.
  • Manages third-party relationship for retail and warehouse food safety audit program; Provides technical expertise including reporting and corrective action compliance. Ensures third-party processes are comprehensive and in compliance with internal company standards.
  • Provides advance notification and communication of emerging food safety issues.
  • Establishes standards for temperature controlled products delivered direct to stores in order to mitigate food safety risk.
  • Responsible for proactively building and maintaining relationships with Merchandising team to ensure food safety parameters are in place for existing and new product offerings.
  • Supervises Quality Specialists supporting Food Safety and additional Product Integrity programs as assigned. Develops and mentors staff through on-boarding, open communication, training and development opportunities and performance management processes; builds and maintains employee morale and motivation; ensures the team is appropriately staffed with required competencies; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Maintains current knowledge of external regulatory requirements. Lends expertise for assessment and resolution of vendor or consumer product issues.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Food Science, Microbiology, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agriculture or other Scientific degree and at least 4 years of experience in Food Safety management in manufacturing, distribution or retail environment.
  • At least 2 years of experience with the food safety standard in distribution chain.
  • At least 4 years of experience with broad based risk assessment/HACCP programs.
  • At least 4 years of experience with FDA Food Code and GMPs (good Manufacturing Practice).
  • At least 2 years of experience with third-party food safety audits.
  • At least 2 years of experience planning, developing, and managing departmental expense and capital budgets.
  • At least 2 years of experience of direct leadership and/or cross functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least (choose one) 15% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Scientific Field preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience in pest control.
  • At least 2 years of experience with food safety programs for retail ready-to-eat food.
