Mars Chocolate is looking for a Quality & Food Safety Scientist in the Burr Ridge, IL area.

 

The Quality & Food Safety (Q&FS) Scientist will be responsible for ensuring the Ice Cream Business Unit complies with the applicable quality and food safety standards and regulatory requirements.  This role is the key coordinator for all quality management related processes (QMP) for the Business Unit and an interface with regional and global quality teams.  This role will also work closely with Mars Chocolate North America (MCNA) subject matter experts to ensure continuous improvement initiatives are leveraged in the areas of External Manufacturing Quality, Distribution Quality, and Business unit quality management.  The Q&FS Quality Scientist will also play a subject matter expert role in dairy/ice cream manufacturing for Ice Cream, providing guidance on site quality management systems and processes.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the site Q&FS manager, lead the business unit quality management review process to identify improvement opportunities across the business unit quality management systems (e.g., internal/external auditing, corrective/preventative action processes).
  • Lead and manage the performance of the business unit Product Related Incident Management, Non Conformances and corrective/preventative action process to assure resolution effectiveness of documented opportunities through assignment and follow up audits. Subsequently, drive the on-going improvement of the business unit quality manual as it pertains to key business unit processes.
  • Lead and manage the performance of the internal audits for the Ice Cream Business Unit, including the development of the audit schedule, assignments, auditor calibration, and reporting within agreed timelines. Lead and manage the external compliance audits by 2nd or 3rd parties.
  • Lead and manage the Ice Cream Business Unit documentation in the document control system
  • Lead the business unit food safety and change management processes (i.e., design and development quality planning processes) through development and implementation of work instructions, training, and problem-solving to assure compliance to Mars Global Standards.

 

  • Ensure Quality and Food Safety Compliance (specifically GMP and traceability) of forward logistics supply chain for Demand Fulfilment Centers, including the distribution center (DC) audits. Manage Quality & Food Safety escalations from the DCs.
  • Ensure Quality and Food Safety Compliance (GMP, food safety programs and conformance to product design) for licensing agreements, including audits of Licensee manufacturing sites. Manage Quality & Food Safety escalations from the Licensees.
  • Ensure Quality and Food Safety Compliance (GMP, food safety programs and conformance to product design) for Co-Manufacturing agreements, including audits of co-manufacturing sites. Manage Quality & Food Safety escalations from the Co-Manufacturers.
  • Lead, manage and implement MARS Standards and regulatory requirements for Co-Manufacturers, Distribution Centers and Licensees.
  • Manage quality and food safety related inquiries from customers and affiliate markets.
  • Gap assess Ice Cream for compliance to Food Safety Modernization Act and new regulations and drive regulatory inspection readiness for Ice Cream
  • Stay current on regulations within the dairy industry, keeping the Ice Cream business informed of changes that could impact manufacturing, quality management and/or business performance.
  • Work closely with Dove Europe, Regional Quality and Global Quality to share best practice and to provide Ice Cream perspective for new global standards.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Food Science, Engineering or related science
  • 4 years of relevant experience in food or related industry
  • Strong knowledge of ISO, Quality Management Systems, Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Safety, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Systems (HACCP), Regulatory Guidelines, Sensory, and/or Microbiology
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, influence, negotiate, motivate and influence teams
  • Ability to travel 10-15% of the time
  • Successful Completion of a drug and background screen

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Food Science, Engineering or related science
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in food or related industry
  • Experienced auditor, lead auditor accreditation through GFSI
  • Experienced in Dairy or Ice Cream Manufacturing
