FreshDirect is actively seeking a Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance in the NYC area. The responsibilities of this role are numerous and include delivering all Food Safety strategies, monitor and review programs within operations that will ensure the production of safe food. These programs may include HACCP systems, regulatory compliance, specifications and guidelines, sanitation standards and design, environmental monitoring, training, crisis management, policies and procedures, construction interventions, microbiological testing, new products, laboratory oversight and operating standards.


  • Partner closely across the Supply Chain,      manufacturing and the Leadership Team in order to develop appropriate      strategies and objectives that drive continuous improvement and regulatory      compliance. The Director will lead the implementation of these strategies      in order to achieve, maintain, and improve food safety programs and      performance company wide.
  • Lead the Food Safety effort to include      developing strategies, objectives, and priorities. Publish and deliver      annual operating plans and strategic plans.
  • Represent FreshDirect with respect to      the quality and safety of products and the food processing environment in      which many different items are prepared according to different processes.      This responsibility includes participation in assessing risk and managing of      crises involving products, and the on-going interpretation and reporting      of information from our customers and suppliers
  • Assure Food Safetyís needs are built      into key cross functional processes from concept through      commercialization.
  • Directs the quality and product safety      components for all Food Safety driven projects through quality planning,      specifications development, and project oversight for compliance to GMP's      and other company policies and guideline.
  • Perform and document assigned      investigations (e.g., audits, product complaints, discrepancies in      production) and propose appropriate corrective preventative actions for      associated issues and events relating to food safety. Assist with the      timely completion of corrective/preventative action
  • Serve on the corporate crisis management      team.
  • Represent Food Safety to all business      teams and serve as a conduit for information. Improve visibility to      performance and business team needs.
  • Lead the Quality Systems program to      define standards for the Supply Chain and broader organization.
  • Transform data into meaningful      information by developing new metrics and define activities that will      drive improvement.
  • Interact effectively at all levels      within the organization, influence key stakeholders, and constructively      manage opposition.
  • Support and provide direction to the      organization for product and environmental pathogen prevention monitoring,      training, HACCP and related customer/supplier initiatives. Provide HACCP      guidance to the organization including HACCP plan reviews and validation.
  •  Plan and implement external audits of      suppliers, vendors, manufacturers, and service providers to identify      deficiencies and non-conformances, assess and report the level of      compliance to regulatory and quality requirements, and assure implementation      of appropriate corrective and preventive action.
  • Manage a 10 person team to assure skills      development and certification, resource planning and FSQA project      execution especially, management training and the on-going maintenance of      a learning environment.










Supervisory Duties: 


  • Trains, assigns work to, and checks work of two (2) or more Teammembers; participates in the decision to hire, fire, and promote Teammembers; does not conduct the same work as Teammembers on a regular basis


  • Bachelorís degree, preferably with a      major in Food Microbiology, Food Technology, and Food Science. Masters is      strongly preferred.
  • Seven (7+) plus years of experience in      food safety in a manufacturing environment; including an understanding of      food science and microbiology.
  • Regulatory background (federal or state)      is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in food safety (Raw and ready-to-eat)
  • Excellent ability to analyze and assess risk
  • Current knowledge of regulatory government requirements (i.e. FDA, USDA, etc.) rules and regulations
  • Must have considerable knowledge of GMPís, HACCP, and SSOP as it applies to the food industry
  • Established reputation to liaise with government regulatory agencies and consumer associations 
  • Expertise in handling product recalls, and assisting with damage control
  • Knowledge of Quality Systems Standards
  • Good knowledge of latest pathogen detection techniques
  • Experience in handling customer and consumer complaints
  • Knowledge of food microbiology, analytical chemistry, and sensory methods
  • Must possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint


Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes plant, warehouses,      production and non-production areas and plant grounds.
  • This position may require approximately      5% travel and work/maintenance coverage beyond the normal hours, shift,      and on weekends/holidays.
