Position Summary:

The Food Scientist I position is responsible for working with their manager to fulfill project requirements. This includes overseeing all stages of product and process development and control, writing new product specifications, and ensuring regulatory labeling and food safety requirements are met. Other responsibilities include developing samples/prototypes of new products, modifying existing products, optimizing existing products, developing specifications for product production labeling, and compiling cost analysis information. Other duties include working with marketing, insights, sales, culinary, FSQA, operations and purchasing departments, coordinating with suppliers of ingredients, ensuring smooth start-up for new product production processes, and completing other special projects as needed. The person in this position is self-aware and seeks opportunities to learn and build relationships within the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee multiple development and optimization projects from concept through commercialization. This includes planning, executing experiments, analyzing data, reporting results.
  • Oversee the development process from concept to commercialization. These activities include bench top development, pilot plant testing, and scale-up production at a federally inspected research facility and final commercialization at full scale production facility.
  • Position is responsible for helping team to identify innovation that is treated as IP that can give Tyson a competitive edge in the industry.
  • Must be able to analyze data in order to build product specification that is process capable.
  • Effectively able to present technical data or concepts to laypersons on their level of understanding.
  • Will compile cost analysis information and provide to product management.
  • Effectively work on cross functional teams across the organization for project completion that will ultimately help achieve our growth and EBIT strategies.
  • Travel to plant product facilities could result in hours worked outside the normal corporate work schedule. Personnel working in any plant environment will need to have a heightened awareness to personal safety due to cold environment, wet floors, moving machinery and the nature of the processing equipment. 



  • BS or MS in Food Science, Meat Science, Food Engineering or related field.
  • M.S. with no experience. B.S with minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Understanding of product formulation, food processing and the Research and Development process.
  • Understanding of regulatory labeling and food safety requirements.
  • Requires good computer skills with ability to fully utilize MS Office products and internal systems
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required. Presentation skills required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with cross functional business partners
