About the Agency

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the public health agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture responsible for ensuring that the nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome and correctly labeled and packaged.

These positions are located in the Office of International Affairs, Import Inspection Division. These positions are located at or near a large port of entry where diversified quantities of meat and poultry products are imported in the United States. This announcement will be used to fill anyone of the list locations below depending upon the needs of Agency and the selectee. Specific job information is listed below for each vacancy.

1.    Duty Station: Portal, ND

·         Schedule: 1st Shift Mon - Fri 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

·         This position works 6 days/week with Saturday OVT

·         There is no government car with this position.

2.    Duty Station: Elizabeth, NJ

·         Schedule: 1st Shift Mon - Fri 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

·         This position rotates every four months. (Est I-44)

3.    Duty Station: Elizabeth, NJ

·         Schedule: 1st Shift Mon - Fri 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

The Food Inspector (Imports):

·         Assures that products approved for import are in full compliance with all applicable Federal regulations governing the importation of meat and poultry products.

·         Verifies the accuracy of labels and foreign health certificates and examines products and containers to determine if the product is sound, wholesome, unadulterated, and meets U.S. requirements.

·         Authorizes entry of all meat or poultry products considered to comply with Federal regulations or refuses entry of any products which violate any of the requirements for admission into this country.

·         Issues notification to customs, brokers, imports, etc., if products are refused for entry, assuring that such products are controlled and properly secured.

·         Applies heightened observation skills to increase scrutiny for evidence of unusual activity related to food safety/security in the event of a declared or perceived threat to homeland security.

·         Performs domestic inspection on cross utilization basis with the Office of Field Operations (OFO), verifying regulatory compliance with the full range of Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety and other inspection requirements involving slaughter and/or processed products, depending upon the specific plant(s) in the assignment.

Specialized experience: In order to meet the specialized experience requirement, you will need to have completed 52 weeks of progressively responsible specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level. This experience may be gained under GS, PHHRS, another pay band system, or any combination of GS, pay band, or other experience.

Specialized experience includes: working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts in order to inspect meat, poultry, and egg products; working with basic SSOP and HACCP principles and practices in order to verify plant HACCP and SSOP responsibilities; performing basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts and methods to perform testing and sampling procedures and experience in reaching and interpreting conclusions.

·         GS-7: Basic knowledge and experience working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, ensuring product is wholesome and unadulterated.

·         GS-8: Intermediate knowledge and experience working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, ensuring product is wholesome and unadulterated.

·         GS-9: Advanced knowledge and experience working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, ensuring product is wholesome and unadulterated.

Time-In-Grade:  Applicants must have 52 weeks of time-in-grade at the next lower grade level (or its equivalent) in the Federal Service within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
