Director of Food Safety

This position reports to the Group Vice President, Smart & Final Operations and is responsible for the development, training and audit compliance of the companyís policies and procedures pertaining to operational food safety.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for ensuring all stores and distribution centers comply with all company, Federal and State regulatory guidelines (USDA, FDA, FSMA)
  • Develops, reviews and updates standard operating procedures related to food safety
  • Creates effective environmental monitoring; testing and control programs for pathogenic bacteria
  • Monitors all components of Food Security Systems
  • Validates equipment modifications on existing or new equipment; ensures equipment can be effectively cleaned and sanitized to an acceptable microbial level
  • Provides sanitary design recommendations for new and existing equipment and modifications and/or installations of existing/new equipment
  • Tracks and reports audit results to Operations senior management
  • Evaluates and audits programs and policies for full certification to safety standards; implements corrective actions based on audit results
  • Oversees coordination and documentation of the food safety training programs to include: third party audits, sanitation, microbiology, pest control, allergen management, HACCP, GMP, SOPís, and Internal Auditing
  • Performs routine analysis and resolves consumer/customer complaints, as they relate to food safety. Assist in the implementation of the corrective action
  • Conducts internal audits and provides sanitation programs for all stores and distribution centers
  • Coordinates communication with department managers to assure timely and accurate reporting of food safety issues
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the position as requested by the Group Vice President

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from four-year college or university in Environmental Health, Engineering Hazardous Materials or an Environmental Compliance Inspector Certificate (Grade 1, 2, 3, 4) or five to seven years food safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Retail Management Certificate is desirable.
  • Computer skills MS Office programs; Excel, Power Point and Word and the ability to apply these skills to essential duties and responsibilities is required
  • Knowledge of USDA, FDA, FSMA food safety requirements
