JOB SUMMARY:

Not only is our company continuously growing, but so is our Research & Development (R&D) department, which is why we have added this additional Research & Development Scientist position to join our thriving team.

The R&D Scientist will work in a state-of-the-art dairy processing facility that produces fresh cream; milk protein concentrates/isolates and milk permeate powders.He or she will be involved in new process and product developments, process and product improvements, conducting lab scale and bench top experiments, commercialization studies for new products, conducting product characterization studies, applications and performing analytical work.The R&D Scientist will interact closely with the Production, Quality Assurance and Marketing & Sales departments to implement new process and product development, and to troubleshoot issues with existing products and processes.This role will also support technical research and customer support on existing and new product lines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently plans, manages and completes research projects to design, develop and improve new and existing product portfolio.
  • Oversees and carrys out hands-on internal bench top and pilot scale trials and collaborates with external research and educational facilities.
  • Manages and oversees R&D technical functions such as sensory, shelf life testing, legal label claims, product specifications, product/packaging improvements etc.
  • Establishes analytical methods to study the characteristics of IMP products.
  • Conducts applications work using IMPís product line.
  • Screens past and current production samples to establish a baseline for key physical, sensory and functional attributes of IMP products.
  • Develops special methods that will facilitate in process analysis of our products and also help predict potential problems for our customers in finished product applications.
  • Evaluates the available technology and makes recommendations to purchase equipment that allows for a state-of-the-art food science lab.
  • Assists QA/QC in the analysis of product that generates customer complaints.
  • Works with Sales, Customer Service and QA to provide special analysis and technical assistance that is requested by customers.
  • Maintains meticulous records to document all aspects of data and studies.
  • Prepares presentations and reports to communicate results.
  • Belongs to appropriate industry/academic groups to keep current on industry trends and advancements in laboratory science.
  • Participates in laboratory proficiency testing and quality assurance activities.
  • Understands regulatory requirements and work to ensure compliance.
  • Performs routine bench procedures as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Position Requirements

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Required: BS degree in Dairy Science, Food Science, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering or other related field.
  • Preferred: MS degree in, Dairy Science, Food Science, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering or other related field.

Experience:

  • Preferred: 2-4 years dairy plant experience.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of protein chemistry.
  • Preferred: 1-2 years of bench top laboratory and pilot plant experience.
  • Experience solving problems, analyzing information, highlighting relevant information and suggesting appropriate actions.

Skills:

  • Confirmed ability to work independently and meet defined deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve defined goals on time.
  • Excellent MS Office skills including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to demonstrate these skills.
  • Capable writer and oral communicator.Able to write reports and prepare/deliver presentations.
  • Well built skills in organization, prioritization and time management.
  • Creative, self starter that enjoys building systems from the ground up.
  • Highly self-motivated individual comfortable working individually and able to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently within the context of a fast-paced, busy environment.
  • Ability to establish good relations with all levels of employees.

Knowledge:

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer software and payroll systems.
  • Advanced knowledge on IRS, local, state, and federal regulations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Walking: occasional moving about on foot to accomplish some tasks.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.Includes activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Subject to up to at least 92dbís. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
