Job Summary

This position provides guidance necessary to standardize microbiological testing being conducted at Trident facilities and external laboratories.  This includes standardization of process environment and product sampling with regard to risk category, selection of target organisms, test methods, and test result interpretation.  The position will also provide training to all Trident laboratory staff to ensure good laboratory practices (GLP) are followed.

Essential Functions:

  1. Risk analyze products and processes to identify strategic microbiological sampling programs required to meet food safety, regulatory, and customer requirements.
  2. Evaluate and identify test methodologies that are approved by applicable customer and regulatory standards
  3. Assists with user/site training and implementation of laboratory procedures
  4. Ensures TS site laboratories are using accurate and cost effective sampling strategies.
  5. Attends training and educational programs necessary to maintain current expertise in microbiological laboratory methods as applicable to food processing.
  6. Maintains a working knowledge of control strategies for microbiological hazards, and communicates these strategies to Trident processing and sourcing operations
  7. Ensures laboratory competency by coordinating and scheduling proficiency testing.
  8. Serves as a technical resource for Trident staff on issues related to food safety/microbiology.  This includes recommendations for micro criteria for TS operations, as well as verification of external suppliers.
  9. Evaluates control strategies, including hurdle steps, for high risk foods

Minimum Qualifications:

Four year degree in food related field, and four years supervisory experience in a food production/quality assurance environment.


Two to ten years supervisory experience in the seafood industry/Quality Assurance field.  Knowledge of FDA regulations, Food Safety, Labeling and Audit procedures required.


Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in microbiology, or related Food Science major.

Special Training/Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.  May be required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.

Mental Activities:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills and occasionally required to use interpersonal and customer service skills.
