GENERAL DESCRIPTION PURPOSE OF ROLE:

Provide leadership and primary point of contact for all internal and external food safety considerations including strategy, auditing, compliance and policy formation. Establish oneself as a key influencer for internal & external policies related to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Safe Quality Foods certifications.

                                                                                                                

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. SQF Certification  Lead the company in the SQF certification process at Heartland facility. Ensure that all SOPs at Heartland are aligned with our corporate policies. Will be directly involved in the continuous improvement projects on food safety and food quality programs
  2. FSMA Compliance - Lead FSMA compliance at corporate, manufacturing and warehouse locations with cross-functional team members (QA, QC, Warehouse, etc.). Keep up-to-date with the FSMA and AAFCO Regulations by going to public meetings, seminars and related-venues regarding the topic.            Support Regulatory affairs on upcoming regulations that affect the pet food industry. Communicate the impact & programs for compliance to senior leadership.
  3. Root Cause Analysis - Investigate food safety and food quality issues at manufacturing and warehouse sites. Determine the root cause of the non-conformance to prevent issues from happening again. Report the corrective action and preventive action to senior leadership, QA, QC and the manufacturing sites. 
  4. Ingredient Specifications - Lead in the development, updating and reviewing of ingredient specifications to include existing and new materials. Regularly meet with Purchasing, R&D and QA/QC in the ongoing process of ingredient approval, including supplier involvement.  Utilize OnBase system in the approval and issuance of completed specifications.
  5. Lead, manage and collaborate with other teams/groups - Staff development to comply with the food safety and food quality programs of the company. Train employees on GMPs, HACCP and related topics. Should be a good resource on current and emerging trends in the industry. Establish and continue to build on relationships with external regulatory related factors; while continuing to establish productive working alliances with internal Departments (QA/QC, manufacturing and development) to maintain and improve existing products and development of new products.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AS REQUESTED:

  1. Develop & Document a sustainable processes for FSMA compliance and SQF certification.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of Quality experience with consumer products
  • Outstanding Communication Skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to Manage Projects Independently
  • Demonstrated Ability to Set Regulatory Strategy
  • Demonstrated Experience Establishing Positive Relationships with Outside Agencies
  • Ability to work and influence across multiple disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex legal and/or regulatory landscapes in tough competitive environment
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30%
  • Ability to work in environment with free roaming pets

 

PREFERRED SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior Quality Experience in Food or Pet Food Industry
  • Pet parent

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 4 Year Degree from Accredited University
