Job Location: Hershey, Pa


The successful candidate for this position will have a strong interest in delivering regulatory guidance for ingredients, and nutrition and health-related claims for new product innovation. The individual will contribute in-depth knowledge of food regulations, and provide assessment and direction for food regulatory and nutrition policy. The successful candidate will also provide input to set priorities and contribute to strategic direction for research programs. This individual will use regulatory and nutritional expertise to assess and provide guidance on ingredients and claims for new product innovation in a cross functional setting, working closely with business partners in Product Development, Marketing, Quality & Regulatory Compliance, and Legal to determine project goals and timetables, execute the projects, resolve regulatory issues and ensure that business objectives are achieved. Additionally, the individual will monitor and help assess external changes in food regulatory policies and regulations, as well as collaborate on development of internal policies regarding ingredients and nutrition. This includes the ability to critically evaluate scientific literature related to the safety and efficacy of food ingredients. The individual will also collaborate in the development of clinical research to support ingredient safety and/or product claims. The individual will also represent Hershey on key trade association committees and other industry groups. Lead a department composed of 2-3 professional level scientist.



        Use regulatory and nutritional expertise to provide guidance in projects for global innovation and product development teams. ē Monitor, assess and communicate scientific and regulatory landscape on issues of importance to Hershey. This includes assessing impact of proposed regulatory change.

        Collaborate on development of company positions for key ingredients and health and nutrition topics.

        Collaborate on clinical research studies to support product safety and claims, to include identification of research groups and scientific experts, protocol development, study monitoring, and assessment of results.

        Provide input for strategic research opportunities.

        Provide thought leadership to help ensure the companyís food regulatory and nutrition policies and positions are current and relevant

        Understand and utilize the R&D research systems which include; Intellectual Property process, Open Innovation, Technical Business Teams, and all Knowledge Management programs.

        Represents the Company in external professional and industrial organizations, such as the Grocery Manufacturers Association, International Life Sciences Institute, National Confectioners Association, Flavor Extract Manufacturers Association, and others.

        Explore new ingredient and processing areas with an eye to invention and breakthrough opportunities.

        Connect and interact with other industries and institutions as required to exchange information and ideas in area of expertise.

        Talent & Organizational Development: Provide overall leadership as it relates to organization structure and People Development: Attracts, leads, manages, and mentors employees in such a way to ensure retention, development, and high performance of talent.


Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

* Demonstrated Management, Leadership and Influencing Skills; Strategic as well as tactical thinker

* Working knowledge of U.S and global food regulations, specifically regarding food additives and claims

* Highly knowledgeable in food labeling regulations and nutrition science

* Adept at assessing and communicating scientific publications, government documents and public policy concerns to non-scientific audiences

* Ability to represent Hershey and establish network with scientific and regulatory experts.

* Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to non-technical audiences

* Highly innovative and motivated individual

* Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently in a flexible work environment with changing priorities

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of presentations to executive levels

* Excellent problem-solving skills

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:


Education: Bachelorís Degree in Toxicology, Biochemistry, Nutrition Science, Food Science or related field plus 10+ years of applicable work experience, or Masterís Degree plus 5+ years of applicable work experience, or a Ph.D. plus 3 years of applicable work experience.


* Minimum 2 years of experience in managing and developing talent 
* Experience in food law a plus
