Job Summary:
The R&D Chemist will function as a key individual in the development of new products and reformulation of existing products. This individual will be heavily involved in all analytical aspects of product research and development. This may include work on or collaboration with any number of instruments (e.g. HPLC, MS, NIR, HPTLC, ICP, etc.) and research facilities. In addition, this individual will manage the R&D Product Development Laboratory, which will include SOP development and maintenance; ingredient sourcing and qualification; and assisting with the bench top and pilot-scale aspects of product development. This position will also be responsible for assisting with the development and assessment of flavor profiles for products, measuring powder flow characteristics, and troubleshooting production issues related to the physical characteristics of powder blends. This individual will work with others within R&D, QC/Analytical, manufacturing, QA, and marketing in fulfillment of the above duties.

Job Functions:
Assist senior R&D staff with product development and technical services responsibilities

Major Duties
1) Assist with, coordinate, and/or perform analytical testing of products or materials
2) Manage the Product Development lab
3) Write and maintain associated SOPs
4) Manage 1-2 laboratory technicians
5) Manage sourcing and qualification of new raw materials and vendors
6) Assess physical characteristics of powders and blends
7) Manage bench top and pilot-scale production
8) Work with other R&D team members, vendors, QC/Analytical, and QA in the establishment and maintenance of raw material specifications
9) Develop protocols, procedures, and action plans for investigating and improving production parameters, blend uniformity, and product stability
10) Manage R&D product and ingredient stability experiments and needs
11) Develop and modify flavor systems for various delivery forms
12) Develop a taste panel/product assessment procedure, and implement company-wide
13) Serve as an R&D team leader on many projects involving QA, QC, and/or operations
14) Aid in other R&D activities
15) Some travel may be required (<15%)

Qualifications:
BS in Chemistry, Food Science, or related discipline REQUIRED. Advanced degrees will also be considered.
Experience with HPLC, HPTLC, and other analytical methodology preferred.
Previous food chemistry/science, production, flavor chemistry, and/or nutraceutical experience a plus
Familiarity with current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs)
Ability to read, understand, and interpret vendor C of As, specification sheets, and analytical test reports
Familiarity with encapsulation, blending and other equipment and processes utilized within the nutraceutical and/or food industries preferred
Read, write and speak English fluently
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Skills:
Excellent English written and oral communication skills are required
Strong skills in Excel, Word, and Power-Point required.
Able to work independently and efficiently in a team environment with minimal supervision
Must be able to multi-task, and be goal- and detail-oriented
Must possess a strong work ethic, work well with others and under stress, and strive for excellence
