This is a great opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in Sensory Science to gain hands on experience in a corporate research and development department.  The Global Sensory Science team employs industry-leading methodologies and ensures that the best research methods and quantitative tools are applied for thoughtful insight discovery.  Our team supports domestic and global consumer studies, quality, shelf life and employee panels (e.g. descriptive, discrimination) and works closely with consumer insights, marketing and manufacturing.  Sensory at Ocean Spray isn’t just a capability, it is a competitive advantage.

The Intern will participate in the design and execution of sensory science research projects related to the day-to-day operation of Ocean Spray Cranberries, including new product development and product maintenance.  In addition, each Intern will be encouraged to conduct an independent sensory research project .  This will include a literature review, plans for design, execution and analysis, and a final report to senior management. 

Suggested topics might include:

  • Comparison of Time Series evaluation methods in cranberry juice (e.g. TDS, TI, MATI)
  • Descriptive panel training and evaluation of various cranberry and grapefruit related taste stimuli.
  • Comparing screening techniques for sensory acuity of employee panels and plant personnel
  • Experimental auctions
  • Rapid methods for visualizing a multivariate product space
  • Other research based on the Intern’s current research or interests

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Ability requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Degree Program and working towards an M.S. or Ph.D. in Food Sciece, Psychology, or related field with a Sensory Science emphasis.  B.S. candidates with strong sensory science interests will be considered. 
  • Have intellectual curiosity and passion for sensory science. 

Duration & Location

  • Position will start in June 2016 and run through August 2016 – candidates must be available for a minimum of 10 weeks (12 weeks maximum).
  • Monday – Thursday 8:00am – 4:45pm, Friday 8:00am – 12:30pm
  • Position is located at our corporate headquarters in Lakeville, MA (about 45 minutes South of Boston – Exit 6 off of Rte 495)
