Job Summary

The Food Technologist is responsible for the execution of Product Development projects from concept development through product launch.  They are responsible for executing all development activities for the project and coordinating with all other functions in the organization to assure project success.  The Food Technologist works with the Sr. Food Technologist or Manager, Product Development to manage the project budget and resource allocation, and is responsible for achieving the project timeline. 


Essential Job Duties

  1. Perform all laboratory, pilot plant, and plant tests in the development of products, processes, and equipment. Analyze and report results. Lead new product start-ups at production facilities by participating in production or quality assurance activities. Is responsible for assuring that the project meets budget, time requirements, quality goals, and OperatorConsumer needs (45%).
  2. Develops potential new products, in conjunction with Marketing, Operations, Innovation, and Engineering management, that have promising areas of research or technology that address unmet needs and have large potential markets (25%).
  3. Directs activities with other departments to meet project goals and timelines. Supports other departments in meeting project requirements (10%).
  4. Develops specifications and testing protocol for new products based on critical consumer and customer attributes. Learn and apply the C2C and lean product development methodologies (10%).
  5. Contributes to the project definition document in coordination with the Marketing team utilizing the appropriate BAF template. This document clearly defines the project goals, resource requirements, budget, and timeline requirements. Ensures project management principles are followed (5%).
  6. Keep abreast of advances in food research and new and emerging technologies through technical seminars, technical publications, etc. Conduct literature searches as required to support project work (5%).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Food Science or related discipline from a four-year college or university. Preferred degrees include Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering.
  • Three years related experience with degree or a minimum of 10-12 years of experience in related roles in the food industry.


  • Must be food focused, with a demonstrated ability to formulate new food products that deliver on taste expectations
  • Embodies resourcefulness and critical thinking, with an ability to utilize scientific principles to develop new products, processes and formulations
  • Demonstrates detail orientation with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to manage projects, plan and coordinate project activities, communicate progress and challenges, and be a technical expert
  • Must be results orientated, with proactive problem solving skills
  • Have flexibility to work beyond normal workday hours, shift work, and some weekends. Operation of process equipment is required
  • Demonstrates leadership, cost consciousness, communication skills, and diplomacy that will promote good relations with all facets of management and other disciplines in the effective execution of projects
  • Functions effectively as a project team member and technical expert
  • Must maintain the highest standards of data management by completing all necessary record keeping to maintain intellectual property and share knowledge across the organization
