Description

Job Summary

The Sensory Technologist will coordinate and execute all sensory functions  at the Boston locations as well as external consumer groups, as needed. This person will help to identify trends in beer and mixed-beverages, conduct innovation tastings, guide new Product Development with organoleptic insights, and build added strength to collecting consumer data.

Position is located in Boston,  MA and reports to the Senior Sensory Scientist.

 

Core Sensory Responsibilities

Panel Building and Sensory QA

  • Panel assessment, track panelist performance and attendance, and provide performance feedback , Screen new panelists and employees for taste and odor acuity, Prepare screeners, consent forms, instructional sheets and scoresheets, Maintain panelist database by adding new panelists, Recruitment of internal and external panelists.
  • Recruit, schedule, train and validate new panelists at both Boston Brewery and Design Center
  • Conduct regular events and tests to refresh current panelists on profiles and introduce new products
  • Develop focused Sensory panels including Hop Profiling, IPA , Tea aging, Cider profiling, Descriptive Panels, and more as needed
  • Conduct the assessment and validation  products created at the Boston Brewery, including mix-blend, nano and 10 bbl samples
  • Lab maintenance: lab supplies, equipment up-keep

Product Development

  • Provide insights into the current market landscape for all product lines.  This includes evaluating top performers in the market and looking for gaps in our portfolios
  • Provide development guidance to R&D project leaders to increase the success rate of new product launches, quality, and productivity initiatives
  • Look for inspiring new ingredient opportunities and trends in the market place
  • Coordinate and report on all tastings involving key decision makers, specifically Jim Koch and David Grinnell
  • Conduct and assist in consumer testing utilizing Sensory methods, Sensory tools, like Compusense,  and statistical evaluation to report results that help to guide Product Development
  • Coordinate all Sensory Transitions of new Products including creating profiles and a training program to improve transition to the Breweries
  • Conduct stability tests for all new products, including line-taint tests
  • Must have excellent communication skills including ability to write concise, informative reports and verbally present complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to listen and identify project objective and influence research plan.

Corporate Sensory Services

  • Coordinating evaluation of inter-brewery products, communicate results
  • Manage Beer Library, prioritizing samples to Jim Koch and useful feedback on shelf-life testing to the breweries
  • Prepare, conduct and monitor all types of sensory panels including stability studies
  • Audit breweries for similarity of product profiles
  • Audit sensory programs for: consistent data collection, methods and reporting
    • Provide direction on changes and guide process
  • Establish Trainings for validation

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Providing technical direction and mentoring to and/or supervising other scientific professionals on staff
  • Making presentations on sensory evaluation to professional organizations and/or continuing education programs/seminars
  • Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation
  • Provide feedback to all Sensory Associates on panel leadership and panel training

Position Specific Education & Experience

 

Education:                                          

  • BS in related discipline with minimum 2  years of Sensory Science project work experience
    • Brewing or alcohol industry a plus
  • MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field preferred

Professional Experience:                

  • In-depth knowledge of technical tools that support sensory testing (automated data collection systems, statistical software, like FIZZ or Compusense)
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus)
  • Experience coaching and mentoring others
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast paced environment High degree of ownership and professional commitment
  • Travel up to 10% of the time
