Overview:

The primary function of this position is to conduct applied research in the area of palatant evaluation and palatability improvement in various forms of cat and dog wet food. The candidate should have skills allowing for the preparation and processing of different types of wet pet food (canned, frozen, fresh, loaves) and the use of palatants to improve the organoleptic properties of these products.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Compile information on equipment and processes required preparing samples and prototypes in the various canned, pouch and loaf formats.
  • Utilize current methods used to improve palatability in various forms of preserved wet pet food.
  • Develop new methods of utilizing liquid and dry palatants for improving palatability of canned pet foods.
  • Monitor and read contemporary technical materials and report on new developments described in the literature and at technical meetings and conferences.
  • Maintain certification status with regard to preparing retorted pet foods.
  • Initiate and lead product development efforts at bench, pilot and production scales. When necessary, refine production protocols leading to performance improvement and cost savings. Execute a continuous evaluation of new and existing ingredients and technologies with regard to their functionality, implementation and feasibility.
  • Prepare project summaries for internal and external use. Prepare formal project summary reports for internal archives.
  • Prepare patent applications concurrent with the development of novel and proprietary technical innovations when appropriate.
  • Participate at Product Innovation Process meetings to facilitate development of new products and/or processes. Based on priorities established, participate in project teams.
  • Participate in the internal and external communication of results via scientific papers, conferences and seminars.
  • Ensure all tasks are followed according to Kemin’s system procedures and internal instructions of the quality system.
  • Work closely with other functional areas to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion.
  • Interact with Product Management and Technical team to address technical questions and provide solutions to problems.
  • Be knowledgeable in and interact with Regulatory Affairs group to insure research efforts are in keeping with current industry and governmental policies.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, food science or equivalent. Graduate degree preferred. At least 5 years’ experience in an industrial research setting is preferred.
  • Experience in the area of low acid food preservation using application-relevant processing equipment and other techniques.
  • Experience as an effective project team player, leader, and motivator.
