R&D - Technician, Chemistry Lab - Walnut Creek, CA
The R&D Technician uses his/her understanding of science to perform the basic and critical experimental work of day-to-day applied research, including generating and analyzing data. Their work is typically “hands on”, in a lab, in a plant or pilot plant, on a computer, or with consumers. These tasks are a vital part of the process of evaluating new hypotheses and developing new formula, product, process, packaging and/or designs.This role will initially be located at the Big Heart Pet Brands Research and Development Center in Terminal Island, CA. In early 2017, the role will relocate to a newly built, state of the art Research and Development Center located on the JM Smucker Corporate Campus in Orrville, OH. We will offer relocation benefits to support the dual locations of this role.
o Entry-level position with limited prior training or relevant work experience.
o Acquires basic skills to perform routine tasks.
o Perform established test procedures. Become proficient in standard operating procedures and test methods relevant to the Job.
o Develop technical skills to design and run ‘scientifically sound’ technical tests.
o Continuously seeks to improve work flows at the bench.
o Document and summarize experimental data for review and interpretation.
o Communicate results or observations to supervisor and other team members, making special note of unexpected results or observations.
o Develop an understanding of and ability to use available resources needed to get the job done.
o Responds to requests for information in a timely manner.
o Has no supervisory responsibilities; manages own workload.
This position requires an AA/AS, BS Science (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, etc.) or Technology (e.g., Engineering Technology, Food Technology, etc.) or a School degree with two (2) or more years of relevant experience.
Two (2) or more years of experience or education beyond HS/Vocational degree is required to
develop the skills necessary to use/operate sophisticated scientific equipment.
o Understands how the assigned duties relate to others in the team and how the team integrates with others in the discipline
o Works with either close supervision or under clearly defined procedures
o Strives to deliver measurable results and takes initiative to improve performance when it deviates from standards
o Listens actively and asks for clarification to ensure accuracy of information needed to complete own work
o Works effectively and productively with others across and within work team to achieve team goals and add value.

OTHER: Incumbent may be required to:
o Walk, stand or sit for extended periods
o Work and move freely and safely around manufacturing processes and equipment
o Lift/carry 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally
o Work in cramped or confined spaces
o Work in manufacturing areas for extended periods, including (but not limited to) exposure to excessive heat, cold, wet/slippery conditions, loud noises, and various smells. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
o Climb on stairs or ladders
High NOISE LEVEL: High
Must be able to safely work in various manufacturing environments for extended workdays, off-shifts and
occasional weekends or holidays.
