Can you use that knowledge and your research skills to develop and deliver a transformative model for food safety and sustainability education while keeping pace with the dynamic fields of food safety education and the latest practices in environmental sustainability? If so, then Kalamazoo Valley Community College may have the ideal position for you.

KVCC is seeking an experienced educator who creates positive energy in their environment and supports the development of a learning-centered environment which allows students to reach their goals. Located at our new campus in a vibrant and diverse area of downtown Kalamazoo, facilities currently under construction include a food production and distribution center and a culinary school. The ideal candidate is a food safety and sustainability educator and practitioner who will take on the following responsibilities:
> Lead campus compliance and the demonstration of “next” practices related to environmental sustainability.
> Engage with community partners to help them reach their goals for local, sustainable, and safe food sourcing.
> Lead health and safety training for staff and students in food production, distribution, and preparation facilities.
> Teach food safety courses as well as a course(s) in at least one other area; e.g., food science, food systems, culinary, nutrition, sustainability, aquaponics/indoor growing systems.
> Ensure local, state and federal food safety compliance for facilities and programs.

The Food Safety and Sustainability Educator will have a deep and demonstrated commitment to a science-based approach to food safety and sustainability education and practices; and to our mission of embedding food production, nutrition, food safety, food science, and environmental sustainability within the college curriculum. S/he will be knowledgeable about multiple delivery models of instruction, including credit-based coursework as well as competency-based approaches to learning. S/he must also have a strong commitment to building a program based on direct engagement with community partners (e.g., farms, schools, healthcare facilities, local and state government, extension, grocers, restaurants).

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a field of study related to food safety and/or environmental sustainability, such as agriculture, biology, chemistry, environmental science, food science, culinary or nutrition, is required. A minimum of 3 years teaching experience is also required. Strong interpersonal communication skills and a willingness to engage directly and continuously with food safety and sustainability experts and others from business, government and industry will be necessary.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

The following are preferred qualifications:
> Master’s degree.
> Teaching experience in science, sustainability, or food safety education at the college-level or to adult learners in other settings.
> Experience working in a laboratory, field or community setting, food production or distribution facility, or culinary setting.
> Experience working with state and community-based organizations or government agencies to establish community based collaborations, as well as familiarity with food safety education programs such a ServSafe®.
> Familiarity with managing budgets and personnel.
