Position Summary

The Food Innovation Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

The position will be stationed at the Food Innovation Center (FIC) with academic home in the Department of Food Science and Technology. The FIC Experiment Station was established in 2000 and is a unique partnership between Oregon State University (OSU) and the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) to foster the success of food and agricultural enterprises by supporting food innovation throughout all industry sectors. The OSU-FIC Experiment Station staff works with food entrepreneurs, small, medium and large-scale businesses, offering technical assistance and outreach in product development, shelf-life evaluation, sensory and consumer testing and food safety. The overall goal of the FIC is to provide an integrated program of research, outreach, technical services, training and education aimed at enhancing the regional capacity for innovation and economic development in the food sector.

This position will cover research and extension activities important for the production and processing of agricultural crops in Oregon. The successful candidate will help coordinate the development of food safety training programs for producers and food processing industries in Oregon. Individual will work closely with colleagues in the OSU Department of Food Science and Technology and organizations such as Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Food Safety Division, the Northwest Food Processors Association (NWFPA) and others to develop training programs required under the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA). Special attention will be paid to small and mid-size enterprises and micro-businesses that will need training to meet with FSMA requirements. Oregon State University is the Western Regional Food Safety Center designated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to provide Training, Education, Extension, Outreach, and Technical Assistance to enhance food safety. This position is expected to help coordinate activities in the center and maintain an extramurally-funded research program associated with development and application of innovative preventative and intervention technologies and strategies to curtail the incidence of food contamination responsible for food borne illness and assist industry in their implementation of the FSMA.

Positions with primary responsibility for extension and outreach are likewise committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audiences.
 

Position Duties

30% EXTENSION

Develop and conduct an effective food safety extension program that is industry relevant and of benefit to cross-department and off-campus faculty. Provide outreach and transfer of research knowledge to the Oregon food industry and colleagues on campus and at county Extension offices and branch experiment stations. Establish training programs in the area of preventive controls, produce safety, traceability, transportation and distribution through workshops, seminars, participation in regional research discussion sessions, and development of educational materials for lay publication and mass media use. The successful candidate will work closely with regional food safety training programs to help implement the Food Safety Modernization Act.


70% AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION

Research and Creative Activities (35%)
Develop a grant-supported research program in the safety of foods important to Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Work closely with colleagues in Department of Food Science and Technology on food safety issues. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students undertaking research projects. Develop an industrially-relevant research program supported by extramural funding which will lead to peer review publications in respected scientific publications. Develop a research program emphasizing the food safety of fresh and processed products relevant to local community. Research opportunities include working with the food industry in their efforts toward food safety and sustainable processing and distribution of Northwest foods. One of the potential research tracks will be developing alternative methods to comply with FSMA regulations under proposed produce rules and critical controls in processing. Another is in undertaking research for implementing an automated full-chain traceability system from farm to fork.

Outreach (25%)
Provide expert advice in food safety with the Client Services program at the FIC focusing on food start-up companies and food entrepreneurs. Function as the liaison between the university and industry and interact with local non-profit organizations to provide information and leadership in food safety issues and implementation of FSMA for small-scale processors. Work to become a Process Authority for acidified foods. Provide outreach and transfer of research knowledge to the Oregon food industry through workshops, seminars, participation in regional research discussion sessions, and educational materials for lay publication and mass media use. Assist in the developing of on-line training/education courses in food safety for undergraduates and professional clientel. Develop a short seminar series on food safety for small-scale processors that can be taught at the FIC throughout the year as well as workshops held off-campus, primarily in rural Oregon.

Service (10%)
Participate and actively engage in Department meetings, serve on committees and other appropriate activities. Attend meetings in Portland metropolitan area involving food systems especially focused on small scale businesses. Serve on College and University committees. Serve on graduate thesis committees.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

-Earned Ph.D. in food science or closely related discipline.
-A record of performance as an accomplished scientist in food microbiology or food safety.
-Ability to accommodate frequent travel within Oregon as well as nationally.
-Have written and oral ability to communicate effectively with public and private sectors.
-Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

-Experience with basic food safety programs, such as cGMPs, HACCP, GAPS, GFSI, and knowledge about the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
-Evidence of ability to advance the field of food safety through research activities and extension programs.
-Record of/commitment to work with underrepresented/ underserved students or other audiences.
-Life experience, education, or training that broadens capacity to equalize student success or impact underserved audiences.
-Clear understanding and commitment to the mission of Land Grant institutions.

35% of the assigned duties are expected to lead to scholarly outcomes, including successful external grants, refereed publications, and peer reviewed presentations.
