Job Summary:

In this role as the Food Scientist  you will be responsible in assisting the Regulatory Manager in investigations and communications involving consumer nutritional and regulatory labeling requirements for Domestic and International consumer food and beverage products, and Global Ingredients for the world’s largest almond company.  Under direction of the Regulatory Manager, you will conduct regulation reviews and prepare documentation necessary for food labels for nutrition and regulatory compliance, due to the unique regulatory requirements of each region, substantial investigation time is required. You will also assist and support Product Development and Marketing staff by also providing linkage to third party non-regulatory certification programs such as Kosher, Non-GMO, and Gluten Free.  The Food Scientist also provides communications involving customer and consumer inquiries.  You will interact directly with PD, QA, Marketing, Sales, co-packers and licensees as necessary to maintain current and accurate documentation of formulas, ingredients and label declarations. In this role you will also provide non-technical support for product development projects as needed (weighing ingredients, packing, and shipping prototypes).


Labeling Support:

·         Responsible to review and approve all retail and food service product labels for North America markets.

·         Supports establishment of product label ingredient, allergen, and nutrition data for all new products approved for commercialization in domestic and export retail markets to insure that labels are consistent with applicable regulations.  Maintains accurate and up to date electronic files of data.

·         Researches labeling issues and provides information pertaining to labeling regulations and allowable product claims.  Tracks recommendations on how products should be labeled.  Captures documentation necessary, and logs nutritional and regulatory labeling information.

·         Supports research into regulatory and technological changes that may affect the food industry and food labeling.  Notifies management of pending changes and recommends course of action.

·         Works closely with Marketing and R&D staff in the development of new products, providing nutrition and labeling information as needed to support product design criteria. 

Formula/Ingredient Information Database Management:

·         Responsible for product formulae review and approval.

·         Provides all required documentation to potential partners and regulators in support of licensing expansion into international markets.

·         Responsible for R&D nutrition database management:

o    Nutrition recipe development for North America, Mexico and European markets.

o    Analytical nutrition data evaluation and validation. 

o    Develop NLEA labeling information to customer & internal cross-functional team members.

·         Provides updates for partners in food service, co-packers and licensees annual documentation request fulfillment

o    Product specifications.

o    Product certification such as Kosher, Halal and Gluten free.

o    Food safety information (e.g., 3rd party audit report, certificate, corrective action plan).

o    Provide documentation as request.

·         Generates customer-oriented product specification

o    North America Consumer Retail Markets.

o    International Retail Markets.

o    Global Ingredient Division Markets.

·         Ingredient evaluation: food additives and processing aids documentation

o    Ingredient supplier documentation request.

o    Liaise with global supplier’s communication to obtain accurate information.

·         Responsible for Non-GMO Project technical verification process and communication to achieve Non-GMO Project verified status.

·         Assists with the preparation of Technical Marketing and Sales Information publications.

·         Maintains database for accurate/current ingredient statements, COAs, Kosher, Allergen, GMO labeling declarations.

·         Maintains database of current product formulas, specifications, and required supporting documents.

Product Compliance and Quality Improvement

·         Coordinates product sample for routine 3rd party lab analysis for product conformance.

·         Participate with product shelf life and sensory evaluation.

·         Assists with Corp Q.A. developing Quality Manual for co-packers and licensees.

·         Assists with Corp Q.A. evaluating consumer complaints.

·         Provides technical response to Consumer Advocacy team answering consumer enquiries.


·         Participate in food industry organizations, PR events, food shows and sales presentations.

·         Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

·         Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related scientific field.

·         Minimum of two (2) years of applicable food/beverage product development or food regulatory experience.

·         Proven track record in innovation and technical accomplishment.

·         Demonstrates strong technical abilities and critical thinking skills.

·         Sound working knowledge of food science principles, GMP, HACCP, food safety, sanitary practices and regulations. 

·         Detail oriented with proven analytical problem solving skills.

·         Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint computer software. Knowledge of Genesis R&D and SharePoint software a plus.

·         Successfully demonstrates positive team attitude and cooperation working with cross functional business teams to develop and commercialize new food and beverage products.

·         Ability to operate typical laboratory food processing equipment and instruments used in product development.

·         Quality, accuracy and quantity of analysis work.   Reliability of judgments and decisions made. Demonstrated initiative.

·         Lift samples weighing up to 25 pounds.

·         Flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal work hours.  Some travel will be required to manufacturing or test facilities, customer facilities, and Trade shows.

·         Occasional hands on work in a food development laboratory and manufacturing environment.  The incumbent must to be able to climb stairs/ladders and work on elevated platforms.

·         Kitchen appliances, restaurant equipment, food processing and packaging pilot equipment, typical laboratory equipment such as pH meter and weight balance.
