Senior Food Technologist - Germantown, MD
Responsibilities: Manage highly technical projects to explore, scope, and develop new product concepts within the dietary supplements category. Act as the key contact person of the Food Applications team where cross-functional teams such as marketing/sales, supply, commercial, quality, and/or analytical, are required to achieve business objectives. Assess flavor, taste, and somatoresponses (e.g. astringency, pungency, etc.) in both raw materials and finished products, while objectively understanding the impact of formulation on these dimensions of quality and preference. Inspect raw materials and finished products to ensure they meet all quality, safety, and legal requirements and specifications (e.g. shelf life). Solve product challenges through a hypothesis-driven approach with a clear definition of objectives, testing protocols, and expectation of the outcomes. Train and mentor junior members of the Food Applications team. Build relevant knowledge on the use of core bioactive ingredients in novel product formats. Participate in personal development activities such as industry conferences, training courses, etc. as agreed upon. Identify and evaluate new instrumental techniques and proposes bringing these in-house where appropriate. Maintain accurate, complete logs/records of experiments and samples in the standard lab notebook. Actively contribute novel ideas to the R&D efforts. Assist in solving technical difficulties with laboratory/pilot plant equipment such as pHmeter, Microthermics, rheometer, etc., as they arise and troubleshooting instrument problems independently. Supervise the work of a Research Associate.
Education/Experience: Masterís Degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Engineering, or related field, or foreign equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience as Food Technologist or Food Laboratory Research Associate or Assistant or related role.
Special Requirements: One year of experience applying (a) key elements of food product development lifecycle steps, (b) technical understanding of food-grade botanical extracts with flavonoids and of the interactions of food components with flavonoid-enriched ingredients, and (c) characterization of food raw materials and ingredients with specific functionalities. Domestic/International travel approximately 15% of the time. Pre-hire drug testing and background check.
