The Product Development Manager must have effective project management skills, a depth of technical food processing knowledge, interpersonal effectiveness, and a depth of experience in similar work. The ideal candidate will be effective in technical and business management, as well as active customer service involvement. The Product Development/Food Technologist will work closely with Sales & Marketing, Production, and Quality departments, as well as our Private Label customers; occasional travel with the Sales & Marketing team. The Product Development Manager reports directly to the Director of Private Label Sales.

Education: BS in Food Science required or related degree required;
Qualifications: Minimum 3+ years of experience in food product development;

  • Experience in food safety regulations: GMP and HACCP;
  • Hands-on product development is required;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects through effective organization, oversight, and hands-on management;
  • Ability to effectively analyze data and to effectively communicate that data and its implications through verbal, written, and graphical means;
  • Knowledge and experience in the natural foods industry highly desirable.
  • Flexibility and ability to travel.

Other Qualifications

  • A strong background in the effective application of scientific principles in a food-manufacturing environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively define project objectives, formulate action plans, and report on progress toward objectives; build, test and evaluate prototypes; and calculate costs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with employees at all levels of the organization;
  • Innate curiosity and creativity in food science and new product development;
  • Experience with product development and developing quality control standards;
  • Cereal and granola experience preferred;
  • Work in the manufacturing area is typically required 20 to 25 percent of the time;
  • Projects may require working beyond the normal workday hours.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Plan the activities and organization of the product development process with the Director of Private Label Sales from the concept stage through formulation, incorporation, production, and evaluation, to accomplish business objectives in an effective manner.
  • Work with the Quality Manager to develop quality control standards, from the raw material stage through to the finished product.
  • Administer and manage the documentation for SQF facility.
  • Manage the project load designed to create new and innovative products that meet specified product guidelines.
  • Apply cereal and granola ingredient functionality and manufacturing process knowledge to the product development process
  • Assist Production Manager to develop manufacturing processes for new products at target throughput, for waste rates, and cost targets.
  • Organize and lead product trials to prove that throughput and waste targets are attainable.
  • Develop and/or implement analytical methods with practical application in enhancing the development and manufacturing processes.
  • Oversee the management and modification of existing products and work with the Director of Private Label Sales in developing new products.
  • Create, update, and maintain nutritional and ingredient labeling.
  • Assist Director of Private Label Sales with research of current consumer markets and latest technologies to develop new product concepts.
  • Work with the Director of Supply Chain Management to select raw materials and other ingredients from suppliers.
  • Analyze product costs based on raw materials and manufacturing costs to ensure profitable products.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in budget development for the department
  • Ensure that product development activities are executed in compliance with established budgets
  • Stay abreast of regulatory issues and product development trends in the cereal and granola industry
  • Manage the relationship with co-packer to ensure quality and reliability.
