The Value Added R&D Technologist will provide solutions by developing product & process specifications for Value Added Pork. This position evaluates current products & processes to drive quality, performance & yield opportunities. The ideal candidate will also assist internal & external customers and provide support to develop solutions through product, process, & packaging.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT - Priority 1 - 30% of Time
Lead the testing & development of new value retail & foodservice pork items
Perform new item shelf life testing ( create protocol, sample creation, data review)
Create Specifications for further processed items
Establish experimental design for new items
Prepare customer samples for in development products
Perform competitive analysis (sensory, analytical, nutrition, claims)
Verify first production runs and customer specific requirements




PROJECT MANAGEMENT - Priority 2 - 25% of Time
Lead the development & execution of new value added Products
Manage Level 2 Initiatives for Product/Process Improvement
Identify & lead cost savings initiatives while delivering quality requirements
Lead an effective brainstorming session to improve a formula & process design
Partner & execute equipment/ingredient testing with outside suppliers
Represent R&D on cross functional value added projects
Develop & Track critical KPI's for areas of responsibility



PROCESS IMPROVEMENT - Priority 3 - 20% of Time
Perform (process) troubleshooting on new existing items
Support the testing and identification of equipment/process improvement opportunities
Evaluate capital equipment initiatives and perform analysis for process improvement
Map Process flow of key value added products - identify & lead opportunities for improvement
Develop test design, collect & utilize data for process improvements

TECHNICAL SUPPORT - Priority 4 - 15 % of Time
Participate and provide technical support to customer inquiries
Perform data analysis to support finance team on product/process costing & financial impacts
Provide technical assessment for competitive products
Provide technical support for sales & customer service
Provide technical troubleshooting for Operations /FSQA

TEAM CFG - Priority 5 - 10% of Time
Participate in Technical Level 10 Meeting.
Deliver internal training on further processed products & pork experts
Attend external industry events/conferences and report back findings
Deliver training ( FSQA, Ops, sales) on attributes/requirements of new further processed items

Requirements

BS or higher degree in a Meat Science, Food Science, or related field with Six or More Years of relevant work experience.
Masters Degree in Meat Science or Food Science with Four or more years of relevant work experience.
The candidate must demonstrate aptitude & success in leading complex R&D Meat Projects in a fast pace, multi-faceted meat processing environment.
Possesses technical knowledge of Meat formulation & processing with specific emphasis on the development & processing of value added pork (development expertise with hams, bacon, fresh & smoked sausages, franks, & smoked meats, a plus). Technical understanding of ingredient functionality, processing & equipment used in the manufacture of value added pork & meats (injection, marinating, blending, tumbling, cooking) is critical
Ability use scientific methodology & data in practical applications in a production environment; technical problem solving skills are imperative.
Excellent communication & computer skills (MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) necessary. The applicant will need to work with specialized formulation data based systems.
Lead through example. Leadership skills essential.
