OVERVIEW: Our Research & Development department is seeking an
exceptional individual to work in our world class facility in Concord,
MA. The Product Development Research Scientist I will develop and execute
action plans to deliver key project objectives in support of Strategic plans
and initiatives. The Scientist regularly interfaces with Marketing,
Operations and Sales to achieve project objectives.
- Plans and implements
specific phases of product development projects, focusing on
innovation, renovation and technology projects.
- Act as a business partner
with cross-functional colleagues on project team (Supply Chain,
Marketing, Sales, Consumer Insights, Finance) to ensure project
- Create science based
specifications that deliver quality and cost
- Connects consumer needs and
opportunities to products and concepts. Develop prototypes to prompt
ideation, consumer conversations, and internal discussions
- Develops specific action
plans to accomplish project goals. Includes experimental design and
execution of bench top, pilot plant, and plant trials, where
- Conducts product and
process development of new products, line extensions, and cost
improvements from research through commercialization.
- Develops and validates
formula, ingredient, label, and sensory specifications.
- Surveys industry for trends
and partners with suppliers to identify and obtain new ingredients
- Applies sound scientific
techniques in analysis of project goals and action plans (i.e.,
experimental design, statistics, etc.).
- Gains understanding of food
product development, consumer test design/implementation/analysis,
and fundamental underlying science/technology.
- Broadens knowledge of
applicable manufacturing processes, packages, and food science
principles as they apply to product development.
- Leads Technical project
team, including process, packaging, regulatory, food safety and
quality, to design and develop products.
- Lead and manage technical
timeline to ensure quality product is brought to market according to
the project timeline.
- Demonstrates awareness and
practice of safety procedures, GMPs, HACCP, food regulations, and
the implications for product/science development.
- Identifies opportunities
based on technical knowledge to enable delivering business goals in
ways not thought of before.
- Identifies and shares
technical research and business insight (within R&D/CQA and
non-R&D/CQA disciplines) that creates the foundation for
innovative solutions in support of the new product pipeline and new
- Gains a strong understanding
of grape ingredients and cost structure to drive usage in current
and new products.
- Demonstrates project team
leadership by actively involving appropriate individuals in delivery
- Manages external
partnerships including turn-key flavor suppliers and contract
- Skills to work in a lab,
pilot plant, and manufacturing scale environments
- Demonstrated balance
between business acumen and scientific curiosity/critical thinking
in order to analyze and solve problems.

Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other
related scientific discipline
- Minimum of 4+ years of
related industry experience
- Must have experience in
food science and the product development process
- Willingness to travel 5-10%
