Cargill Malt is seeking a Production Manager at our Spiritwood, North Dakota facility. This opportunity would provide an ideal candidate the ability to work for one of the leading malting companies in the world and make part of a team that produces malt primarily for brewing customers in North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Europe including Russia.

The Production Manager is responsible for producing and delivering malt according to customer specifications, within preset budgets and in conformance with all relevant Cargill and BU policies and procedures. The Production Manager will work with both the barley and malt elevators and supervise the malthouse operations; Ensure all employees are properly trained in Cargill policies and procedures as well as all production process procedures and employee safety; Knowledgeable in the area of customer specifications and able to set production parameters to meet these specifications; Manage plant budgets and understand how processing parameters affect operating costs & product quality.


Principal Accountabilities:


  • Malt Production (40%): Manage and/or supervise daily recipe adjustment, blending, and storage and preparation of both barley and malt. Help manage elevator operations. Ensure malt production needs meet the budget in terms of quantity, yield, energy consumption, overall cost, customer requirements and legal requirements.
  • Customer Shipments & Inventory Planning (20%): Guarantee minimum stock of malt in specifications for each customer or customer group (Bucket). Manage and/or supervise barley and malt on hand, production schedules, customer specifications planning (barley and malt requirements to meet customer specifications), and assign lots for barley and malt into bins. Certificate of Analysis (COA) review to ensure in-spec prior to shipment and planning for on-time shipment.
  • People Management (20%): Assess training and development needs for all direct and indirect reports (malt operators, malt house supervisors, and maltsters) and execute on an established training plan. Actively participate in/follows up on engagement improvement plans. Reviews the performance of all reports every 6 months.
  • F&EHS (10%): Champion, support and role model (food) safety programs and practices throughout operations in partnership with site EHS Coordinator and Plant Manager.
  • Miscellaneous (10%): Be an active participant in the plants continuous improvement plan (energy consumption, yield, volume, cost, engagement, etc.)  Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor or Associate's degree in Engineering, Bio-Chemical Engineering, Agronomical / Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, Malting/Brewing or equivalent related field
  • 5+ years experience in malting and brewing or comparable food related industry required
  • People management qualifications/experience
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Demonstrated organization/prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results with the appropriate behaviors (e.g. safety)
  • Demonstrated ability to generate innovative/creative ideas and move them into implementation 
  • This role requires strong competencies in the areas of leadership, communication, teamwork, interpersonal effectiveness, initiative and process discipline


  • University degree in Bio-Chemical Engineering, Agronomical Sciences, Engineering, Malting/Brewing or equal by experience
