ALMOST all fresh chicken meat carries gastro-causing bugs, according to the latest information from SA Health.

It has found that more than a third of fresh chicken meat contains salmonella, while about nine in 10 samples has campylobacter.

Both bugs can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

In the latest State of Public and Environmental Health Report for South Australia, SA Health says the results are "not unexpected" but reinforces the need for safe food handling processes.
