The Wisconsin-based processor of bagged spinach that tested positive for salmonella has been given the green light to resume packing.

On May 4, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection told Milwaukee-based Kleen-Pak Foods that tests of the company’s spinach processing equipment found no traces of salmonella, said Jerry Kowaleski, Kleen-Pak’s vice president.

Earlier tests of spinach in the company’s coolers also found no salmonella.

As a result, Kowaleski said Kleen-Pak could begin repacking spinach as soon as May 5.
On April 29, the company announced a recall of about 8,000 retail packs and 1,200 pounds of wholesale and foodservice curly leaf spinach, following a routine test by the Wisconsin agriculture department that turned up a positive sample for salmonella.

No illnesses traced to the contamination have been reported.

The spinach was shipped  to Kleen-Pak by Pinto Creek Co. LLC, Queen Creek, Ariz.

The recalled product is Kleen-Pak-branded 10-ounce and 1-pound packages of curly leaf spinach and has a use-by date of April 29, April 30 or May 1. It was distributed in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Chicago area.
