(UPDATED COVERAGE, July 7) After random sampling of anaheim peppers at a Wegmans Food Markets Inc. warehouse in New York was positive for salmonella, the chain pulled the peppers from its shelves.

Wegmans posted information on its Web site,, in early July.

The New York Department of Agriculture and Markets tested the peppers.

"There isn't an official recall as of yet," said Eben Kennedy, produce category merchant for Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans. "(The New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets) notified FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and they are investigating."

In the meantime, anaheim peppers are not for sale at the stores. The site directs consumers to come to the stores - without the peppers - for information on refunds.

The chain also has a consumer information line available at (800) 934-6267, extension 4760.
