Korea may be classified as a controlled risk country for mad cow disease by the World Organization for Animal Health, better known as the OIE.

The Ministry for Food and Agriculture says it is planning to send an application to the animal health authority within a few months to upgrade Korea's risk status from "undetermined" to "controlled."

The ministry says Korea has already accumulated the sufficient scores that the OIE requires for controlled risk countries in its three-status program. The international animal health watchdog will decide on the issue as early as May next year.
