Vietnam: Cases of food poisoning drop but patients increase

Nhan Dan – Since early this year, 106 cases of food poisoning have occurred in the whole country, with 4,718 people suffering from food poisoning, 3,670 of them have been hospitalised and 43 died, announced the Food Safety and Hygiene Department under the Ministry of Public Heath, on July 22.

These figures mean a drop of over 12% in number of cases of food poisoning as against the same time of last year, but represent an increase of over 53% in number of people suffering from food poisoning and dead.

Noticeably, the South Eastern region has the highest number of people suffering from food poisoning, accounting for approximately 52% of the number of cases of food poisoning in the whole country.

However, the highest number of fatality cases of food poisoning is in northern region. There have not been any fatality cases of food poisoning in South Eastern region, North Central region and the Central Coastal region.

The Food Safety and Hygiene Department said that the cases of food poisoning had mainly occurred in families with over 55% of total cases of food poisoning, followed by the cases happened in collective canteens, wedding ceremonies, especially in pavement food shops with only 6.6%.
