Job Description

Altria Client Services is currently seeking highly qualified Principal Flavorist to lead and develop flavor systems compatible with current, new and future product lines as part of our Research and Development Organization located in Richmond, Virginia.

This position is responsible for providing direction, technical expertise, and signature approval authority in the creation and reformulation of casings, top flavors, aftercut flavors, process and product requirements for tobacco and non tobacco products. Position functions as an understudy to Master Flavorist and a mentor to Senior Flavorists and Senior Blenders.

Key Accountabilities:
Engage Marketing, Consumer Research, Blend Creation, and other Product Development groups in the identification, direction, and the translation of consumer insights and preferences into new product ideas.
Provide technical leadership on the sensorial characteristics of flavor ingredients, compounded flavors, processing aids, specification changes, final products, and non-conforming products as a member of the Leaf Blending & Flavor Development Panels.
? Manage the development of Project Briefs and co-development activities with flavor suppliers adhering to the conditions of the Master Service Agreement.
? Lead and direct the development and implementation of infrastructure to assure flavor systems are developed in accordance with Product Integrity guidelines.
Develop recommendations for the Flavor Processing group to reduce manufacturing complexity and costs.
Lead and direct in the implementation, creation, and maintenance of PMUSA quality systems procedures and work instructions in support of legal and regulatory requirements.
Serve as a project manager and provide technical expertise on cross-functional projects for new product and new process creation.
Build capability for future Flavor Creation talent through training and mentoring less experienced Flavorists.

Skills and Requirements:

Bachelors degree in Chemistry or Food Science preferred or possess a minimum of seven to ten years experience in a field related to creative flavor design.
Experience required in tobacco and food flavors, flavor chemistry, and/or flavor processing technologies.
Must possess strong strategic planning and project management capabilities.
Must have in-depth knowledge of Flavor Compounding, Chemistry, and interactions/reactions.
? Must possess expert knowledge of flavor ingredients, flavor application equipment and technologies, as well as in-depth knowledge of tobacco, casing, and flavor interactions.
Must be able to effectively present and communicate complex technical information to Senior Management.
? This position requires advanced knowledge of computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office, SAP, and other business systems)

Additional & Physical Requirements:

The ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
The ability to work in production environment which may involve climbing ladders.
The willingness to work in a production environment that may be dusty and noisy requiring personal protective equipment to be worn.
The willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally in a car or via air.
This position requires smoking to assess the sensory characteristics of cigarettes; therefore, it is open to current smokers only.
