The extent of food-borne illness in the United States is not completely known because most cases are minor and not reported.

Yet about 5,000 people die every year from food poisoning and hundreds of thousands more are hospitalized. Itís time for Congress to ensure that the industry does better.

A pending bill would require the Food and Drug Administration to increase inspections of high-risk processors and require the agency, within two years, to devise a system that would enable it to trace contaminated products to their sources within two business days of their discovery.

The bill also would require foreign processors who export to the United States to register with the FDA, and increase penalties for violations.

The bill should pass in order to ensure that the food supply is as safe as possible.
