The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has decided to observe October 16, 2008 as Food Safety Day in India. This was announced by Rahul Sarin, Secretary, MoFPI on the platform of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) sponsored two-day national seminar on ‘Food Safety and Quality’  in  New Delhi.  The day will coincide with International Food Day.

Informing this, the Secretary said that a national campaign will be launched by involving different segments of the society to create awareness about the hazardous effects of food contamination. “We have decided to involve schools in this national campaign and also asked the Human Resource Development Ministry (HRD) to incorporate food safety and hygiene in the school curriculum,” says Sarin. He said that the Ministry wants to take the amount of processed food from the present two per cent to around 25 per cent in the next few years. “To achieve this target, we need to reduce wastage and also must enhance food safety and quality,” adds Sarin.
