South Korean officials said the government will heighten inspections of beef imports from Nebraska Beef Ltd.

Having initiated a recall of primals, subprimals and boxed beef based on fears of E. coli O157:H7 contamination, Nebraska Beef will be subject to measures covering all cuts of beef, Yonhap reported.

Seoul originally set out to scrutinize only ground beef imported from the Omaha, Neb.-based processor. (See S. Korea to check Nebraska Beef product for E. coli on Meatingplace.com, Aug. 13, 2008.)

"The updated measures cover all beef like boneless cuts, ribs and by-products, and reflect ongoing, inconclusive investigations into why meat from the company has been contaminated with the bacteria," a ministry official was quoted as saying.

The official reportedly went on to say the tightened protocol will remain in place until Seoul feels Washington has taken all the necessary preventative steps.
