HEALTH Ministry inspectors have shut down 62 food outlets in the Muharraq area, it was declared yesterday.

The raid was the first of a nationwide inspection campaign targeting all five governorates to ensure food safety during Ramadan.

A total of 1,160 outlets were inspected over a week, said a Public and International Affairs Directorate spokes-man.

"A total of 992 were found in violation of some sort, most of which were minor in nature," he said.

While 195 were fined for the violations, another 121 were warned to correct their violations or face closure.
