Residing at The Hershey Company's Technical Center, this position involves a unique opportunity to work in the Food Science and Technology group. This group is responsible for evaluating new technologies and ingredients, improving current processes and products, and providing new product opportunities through research discoveries. The Research Scientist will work independently and as a part of various teams to achieve their goals on project assignments. The individual should be able to interact with many different types of individuals including technical support, various scientists, product developers, marketing and management.


Individual would be leading research efforts geared to providing solutions in various areas for the Hershey Company. These areas include chocolate making and processing, confectionery formulations and processing, food ingredient interaction, and developing new confectionery systems.


Project responsibilities include developing the experimental design, performing the experiments and reporting on the results. A large part of this individual's responsibilities include becoming an expert in sugar based systems. This individual should be able to provide solutions to sugar, polyol, and sweetener based issues. These issues can emerge from new product development, pilot plant scale up and plant production areas. The individual should be motivated by problem solving in all areas of confectionery processing.

This position interacts closely with technical, professional and managerial staff of R&D as well as production, engineering, marketing and commodities. This person is required to provide leadership and instruction to technicians and professionals assigned to assist on a project. This individual will be responsible to coordinate efforts of other members of the project team as necessary.

This individual will interact with other industries and institutions as required to exchange information and ideas in area of expertise.



Candidates with a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, food science, or food engineering plus 6 years applicable experience, or a Master's Degree in chemistry, food science or food engineering with 4 years of applicable work experience will be considered.


The preferred candidate would have a Ph.D. in chemistry, food science, or food engineering with at least 2 years of applicable work experience.


This position can be filled at a variety of levels based on the combination of education and experience.
