President Ma Ying-jeou said Wednesday that a cross-strait food safety hotline should be established to make sure Taiwan gets the latest information on Chinese food safety issues. Recent testing has uncovered a number of processed food product contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine, with the source being Chinese dairy or vegetable-protein ingredients.

The president also condemned unscrupulous Chinese businessmen who doctored milk powder and other food products to raise their apparent protein content.

Ma said that there needs to be greater understanding of food safety information from China and better protection for consumers. He said setting up a cross-strait hotline dedicated to food safety will help Taiwan get a heads up on problems.
