Purpose
To complete a variety of specialized duties that support QA functional operations processes and programs in support of department initiatives, Private Brands quality image and to achieve regulatory compliance.  This position will work closely with QA Leadership and Private Brand Teams for new product development, vendor performance evaluations, product quality measurements, initiated vendor issues and customer responses across the hundreds of private brand suppliers and thousands of private brand products.


Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities


Primary
Performs duties during laboratory testing of Private Branded products by acting as the recorder of findings and by performing analytical procedures as necessary.  These laboratory procedures may consist of but not be limited to: organoleptic studies, pH monitoring, Brix/solids levels, titratable acidities, viscosities, vacuums, weights and measurements.
Receive sample shipments, unpack, label and store samples upon arrival.  Communicates with Private Brands Product Managers to ensure efficient flow of product evaluation projects.
Sets up, prepares samples for testing and cleans up after the cuttings.  Records and prepares cutting reports as needed, distributes to appropriate Product Managers.  Communicates with vendors and conducts product research and cuttings as needed.
Coordinates the selection, delivery, and evaluation of Private Branded products from corporate Distribution Centers) for quality evaluation.  Procures additional comparison samples either locally or from out of town locations and directly from manufacturers’ plants as directed.
Gathers information from current specifications denoting any errors or omissions and provides feedback to Product Teams
Responsible for maintaining Quality Assurance lab facilities and equipment.  Responsible for the disposition of excess or unused samples.
Reviews food product and non-food product against specifications for compliance
Prepares, reviews and/or compares information/data and makes determination within defined guidelines, parameters, and instruction
Maintains complex records and files, searches and investigates information found in files
Manages own work with minimal supervision, acting on broad guidelines from the FSQA Director and QA manager(s)
Collects and compiles information and data from various sources for the creation of specific departmental  reports, graphs and data comparisons
Analyzes and develops major projects and carries projects through to completion
Researches and interprets a variety of levels of information
Provides advice and assistance to other employees in unit and acts as liaison to other units.
Maintain a database of results specific to the product analysis
Actively follow-up with suppliers on non-compliant products
Train laboratory staff as needed for testing procedures on products and act as a resource for Quality Assurance questions.


Secondary
Answers department phones as needed and routes to appropriate area
Responds to inquiries that require specialized knowledge of the function to respond
Acts as a backup to other functional areas within QA, consumer response and potentially supply chain and recalls
Posts records and processes departmental documents requiring specific knowledge of functional area
Completes detailed keyboarding projects such as preparing correspondence from rough drafts and completing specialized departmental forms
Other duties as assigned by Director of FSQA or other department leadership
Work with QA Manager(s) in the processing of supplier audit information, responses and billing
Special Project work as assigned


Job Requirements
Relevant Experience, Education, Certification, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Family Consumer Science, Biology, Chemistry or related degree preferred
Previous experience working with basic laboratory equipment required
Previous work in food manufacturing desired
Broad knowledge base for evaluation of products and manufacturing facilities associated with a wide variety of foods, non-foods, general merchandise, and other categories.
Reading, writing, math and communication skills at a proficient level
Ability to follow verbal or written instruction
Math skills at a specific level (i.e. one step: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or two step percent calculations or more advanced)
Computer literate and functionally able to use Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint.
Working knowledge of PLM systems, specifically AGENTRICS, is desired
Significant organizational skills and experience
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Be detail oriented, ability to be organized, and strong analytical skills
Must possess the ability to work with and through others effectively and cooperatively to achieve desired results. Contributing to a cooperative, teamwork atmosphere within SUPERVALU is considered essential to the effectiveness of this position.
Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently, as well as motivating others and directing others to attain the goals that are set for the department.
