being urged by Town Hall food safety officials to remove 'Samsono'
branded Ears & Tongue roll from sale.
It follows a warning to Tower Hamlets Council from the Food Standards Agency
about contamination by high levels of Listeria monocytogenes,
a bacterium which can cause disease.
The contamination can lead to infection with symptoms occurring between eight
hours and three months, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
More serious symptoms such as blood poisoning or meningitis could follow-while
pregnant women could risk miscarriage or stillbirth.
The affected product from Lithuania
was imported by Lignesa Foods and distributed
mainly to Eastern European specialty food shops. They have recalled all 'Samsono' brand Ears & Tongue Roll.
The levels of Listeria monocytogenes detected were
well above the legal limit, the local authority said.
A public appeal has been started this week for shoppers who see the product
