Cebu to host food safety confab

Delegates from Southeast Asian countries will gather at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu for the 5th Asian Conference on Food and Nutrition Safety: Science-based Solutions Sustainable Actions from November 3 to 7.

The forum will focus on the latest global issues and those pertinent to Asia, addressing emerging and re-emerging food and water safety concerns impacting the farm-to-table continuum.

It also aims to update participants on scientific advances and regulatory development that will further the understanding of science-based decision processes and harmonized approaches based on internationally recognized standards and methodologies.

The first two days or the pre-conference will be devoted to a satellite symposium on biotechnology and nutritionally enhanced food and crops.

The last three days or the main conference will tackle on topics that include the impact of trade, bio-security, chemical and microbial contaminants, risk analysis, safety of water and processing methods, packaging, and new technologies as well as issues related to addition of nutrients and non-nutrients to food, among others.

Renowned scientists from international agencies, governments, health and research institutions, as well as the industry will share their perspectives, discuss best practices and harnessing of new technologies for sustainable actions to secure safer and better food supply.

Organized by the International Life Sciences Institute South East Asia Region (ILSI SEAR), the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, and the Department of Science and Technology in Central Visayas (DOST-7), the event is expected to draw over 300 participants from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, to name a few.

The conference will also allow participants to network with key officials and experts in food and nutrition safety.
