(Dec. 15, WEB EXCLUSIVE) The Produce Marketing Association has raised $375,000 for food safety initiatives so far in 2008, and the Newark-Del.-based association said the outreach is continuing.

Called Gold Circle: Campaign for Food Safety, the effort helps fund produce specific food safety research at the new Center for Produce Safety at the University of California, according to a PMA news release.

The center was founded with resources provided by PMA and Salinas, Calif.-based Taylor Farms Inc., the news release noted. The Gold Circle contributed to the hiring of PMA’s first science officer and food safety expert, Bob Whitaker.

The news release said that 375 PMA members have donated $1,000 per company to the Gold Circle program to support food safety initiatives in four primary areas, research, consumer education, outreach and training and communications. More investment is being sought by PMA to bolster the initiatives, the news release said.

A list of PMA’s current Gold Circle members is available here.
