322 SICK ON CRUISE SHIP STEAMING FOR NYC
September 2, 2003
Associated Press/N.Y. Times
NEW YORK -- U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials were
cited as saying that at least 322 passengers fell ill during an outbreak aboard the Regal Princess cruise ship with a Norwalk-type virus, causing the vessel to cut its voyage short and head for New York. A passenger aboard the ship was cited as saying that a significant fraction of the more than 2,000 people aboard had been ill ?so many that the crew
was seriously short-handed. No one answered calls yesterday, the Labor Day holiday, at the California headquarters of the ship's owner, Princess Cruises. The ship was expected to
put in early this morning at Manhattan's West Side. The Times reports that in e-mail messages, a passenger on the Regal Princess
described the ship as being in some disarray, with some passengers quarantined, others hiding their illness to avoid quarantine, and still
others complaining about poor service by a crew stretched thin. The passenger, who asked that her name not be used, alerted Ross A. Klein of the outbreak. Mr. Klein, who has written books on the cruise industry and
operates a Web site, www.cruisejunkie.com, that publicizes unflattering information on the industry, told the news media. The passenger wrote that many crew members had been quarantined, and that the others were busy continually scrubbing and disinfecting the ship.
