JOB PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the management of all food safety and quality assurance policies / programs, USDA compliance and product quality initiatives for a pork processing facility harvesting over 22,000 animals per day. These programs will be managed using strategic initiatives and execution excellence to provide compliance with all quality specifications, USDA/FDA regulations and International Regulatory laws having jurisdiction over Seaboard Foods facilities The manager assists with the development and implementation strategies and programs to achieve exemplary food safety, quality standards and customer satisfaction. The position has direct management responsibilities over the Food Safety, Quality Assurance programs, sanitation monitoring and laboratory programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete understanding of FSQA software systems (Cat2, Safety Chain, M3, Carlisle, etc.) utilized to monitor/audit the production environment.
  • Assists with the development of a high performing team driven by solid talent identification, development and succession planning of employees engaged food safety, quality assurance and laboratory activities during start-up and beyond.
  • Responsible for the coordination, development and oversight of all corporate and plant FSQA compliance activities, including all regulatory label compliance, specification approvals, production development, GFSI, HACCP plans and lab procedures
  • Promotes a positive and productive working relationship with FSIS and USDA
  • Proactively works and develops processes to prevent customer complaints, recalls, withdraws and loss of customers due to quality issues; research and recommend enhancements to food safety, product quality, production procedures, equipment, and management practices.
  • Collaborates with plant management on all FSQA activities to add guidance and expertise in all areas where a subject matter expert is needed. (ex. Lab, AMS, AW, data collections, etc.)
  • Effectively partners with Operations, Maintenance, Sales, Supply Chain and other functional areas in the organization to teach, lead and guide all employees engaged in food production in food safety and quality initiatives.
  • Ability to manage written responses, customer inquiries and visits for food safety and product quality complaints or claims.
  • Creates and foster a culture that understands and recognizes food safety and quality as a top priority, ensure employees are trained on an on-going basis and in compliance with company regulations to ensure quality and consistency of products; ensure high levels of engagement from all levels of employees within the facility through positive and effective employee relations.

REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty/function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the work environment, knowledge, skills, and/or ability required or preferred.   • Bachelor’s degree in meat science, food science, microbiology, engineering, or related discipline with two (2) years of progressively responsible positions or five (5) years of progressively responsible positions in the meat/pork industry.
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of current and application of USDA and FSIS directives and regulatory requirements.
  • Must have adequate experience to demonstrate thorough knowledge, skills and abilities of both commercial and technical aspects related to FSQA for the pork business.
  • Well-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a large team of diverse employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand advanced statistics and statistical analysis for process control, along with the ability to design experiments and use mathematical formulas and calculations to prepare or interpret routine statistical information.
  • HACCP/Food Safety Certification and experience with GFSI/SQF (SQF Practitioner, PCQI certification n a plus).
  • Additional essential duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and sometimes push/and or move up to 300 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to hot, cold and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles,and is frequently exposed to animal waste and animal dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud requiring hearing protection in all protection areas.
