University of Utah Manufacturing Extension Partnership (UUMEP) Center is the
official representative of the MEP National Network in Utah. It focuses on
helping small and mid-sized manufacturers generate business results and
thrive in today’s dynamic economy by providing any Utah manufacturer with
access to resources they need to succeed. The
Manufacturing Consultant in Food Safety initiates and maintains relationships
with manufacturers, assesses their challenges and opportunities, and delivers
continuous improvement consulting and training solutions. Manufacturing
Consultants provide direct consultation to manufacturers within their area of
expertise. This
position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the
ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s
response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible
for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet
capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the
University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting
Agreement. Responsibilities Candidates
should be sincerely interested in working with food and beverage
manufacturers with food safety certifications, new product development,
manufacturing technology, design for manufacturing and best manufacturing
practices, and operational excellence. Candidates should be subject matter
experts in FDA and USDA regulations and certifications. The primary
responsibilities of this role include identifying gaps in food safety
compliance, specifically the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), providing direction
and expertise on corrective action plans and activities to assist the
manufacturer in meeting government regulations, customer requirements, and
other standards like Safe Quality Food Certification (SQF). This person will
be coordinating process development activities within a client’s
organization, working with stakeholders to understand and map their business
processes, and leading change. Candidates
will also have training responsibilities, developing content, providing
instruction, and working with clients to improve their understanding of food
safety as applied to their business. This training may be public/open
enrollment or company-specific. Expertise and training topics may include
FSPCA Prevention Control for Human and Animal Food, Foreign Supplier
Verification Programs, Hazard Analyses Critical Control Point (HACCP),
Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Defense, Food Allergens, Sanitary
Design, and Layout. Must have a strong work ethic, a great attitude, and the ability to
thrive in an autonomous, objective-driven environment. Food safety and
quality management proficiency through certifications, skills, and
experience. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with the
proven ability to lead companies down a path of continuous improvement, with
the demonstrated capacity to diagnose company needs and effectively
communicate value to all levels of the company, from production personnel to
top management. Food Safety Engineering, Auditing or Consulting experience is
strongly preferred. That said, we will also consider candidates with a track
record of working in Food Safety Compliance / Quality within the industry. We
prefer candidates who have varied process improvement methodologies and are
willing to tailor their approach based explicitly on the client’s needs.
The
position requires travel to manufacturing facilities across the state.

must be capable of accessing manufacturing facilities, which may not be ADA
accessible. This

degree with emphasis on manufacturing, engineering, technology, and
consulting and/or business management required. Master’s Degree preferred.
Four years or more of advanced experience in manufacturing sales,
consultative sales and/or business-to-business sales preferred. Applicants
