The Department of Food, Bioprocessing
and Nutrition Sciences at NC State University seeks an Extension Associate to
collaborate with faculty and build-upon existing food safety programs within
the FBNS department. The incumbent will be involved in managing and
performing laboratory procedures to support a fee-for-service lab, as well as
assist with the development and delivery of food safety extension and
outreach activities.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage a BSL-2
laboratory and perform microbiological testing as a fee-for-service to the
NC food industry to confirm that industry, state and federal requirements
are met, including verification and validation of food safety management
systems and controls.
- Perform compliance
and administrative duties as it relates to managing the laboratory, maintaining
fiscal responsibility, and stakeholder interactions.
- Work collaboratively
with county extension personnel, extension associates, and NC State
faculty to develop and deliver food safety training and outreach
material for NC food manufacturers and fresh produce growers.
- Assist with providing
technical support to meet the food safety needs and opportunities of NCā??s food manufacturing and fresh produce industry.
- Respond to food
manufacturer inquiries or questions related to food processing and safety.
- Develop and utilize
various media platforms to communicate current and timely information,
research results, and relevant industry updates, as well as a schedule
of current and future activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
in food science, or related field.
- Must have the ability
to understand applicable specifications and perform microbiological testing,
including quantitative and qualitative methods for detection of indicator
and pathogenic organisms.
- Thorough understanding
of cGMPs, as well as additional FDA food
safety requirements, including FSMA and the Preventive Controls for
Human Food Rule.
- Strong critical
thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written,
verbal and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Be a self-motivated
individual and independent worker with excellent leadership skills.
