Duties
Summary
This position is located in the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA),Center for Food Safety and
Applied Nutrition (CFSAN),Office of Food Safety (OFS), Division of Seafood
Science and Technology (DSST), Chemical Hazards Science Branch. The incumbent
serves as a Research Chemist, leading and working with a research team, to
investigate chemical contaminants and biological toxins in seafood.
Responsibilities

- Plans and
executes complex chemical studies, adapting, modifying, and improving
approaches to meet specific needs or to resolve problems.
- Performs a
wide range of duties for conducting laboratory experiments in food
safety using diverse microbiological, biological, and chemical assays
for the analysis of microbial pathogens and toxins in foods.
- Writes reports
detailing results and conclusions.

- Identify
appropriate procedures and materials needed for the project by reviewing
literature and obtaining information from seminars and meetings, and
recommendations to the project leader or branch chief for approval and
implementation.

wide range of duties for conducting laboratory experiments in food
safety using diverse microbiological, biological, and chemical assays
for the analysis of microbial pathogens and toxins in foods.
- Writes
reports, makes poster and slide presentations at conferences, writes
manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed articles in professional
journals.

Qualifications
The position of Research Chemist
falls under the 1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at
grade GS-11/12,

In order to qualify for this Research Chemist position, GS-1320, you must
meet the following:
Basic Requirement
A. Degree: physical sciences, life
sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry,
supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral
calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and
experience - course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including
at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through
differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics,
plus appropriate experience or additional education.
NOTE: Applicants must submit all
relevant transcripts that demonstrate you possess the required education to
meet the Basic Qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications
Specialized Experience. Specialized experience is experience that
equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities
to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in
or related to the work of the position to be filled.
You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09
grade level in the Federal service that includes experience:
Conducting or reviewing studies concerning chemical and/or physical related
processes. OR
Education: Have 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate
education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral
degree. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Have a combination of
education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown in A
above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by
mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6
semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional
education. (Applicants must possess a combination of education and experience
such that when the two are combined the total equals 100%.)
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess one (1) full year of
specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal
service.
Conducting or reviewing studies concerning chemical and/or physical related
processes; AND
Writing reports that provide recommendations to management on findings or
writing scientific publications.
