Full Job Description

The Food Scientist II will be responsible for helping to assess and develop products for flavor, nutritional value, texture, and appearance. Your responsibilities will range from analysis and selection of raw ingredients to integrity and quality of finished goods. Keeping food safety and quality in mind, you’ll assist with formulations, R&D batch scale-ups, writing of SOPs, shelf-life testing and running process validations.
Come work with Tofurky! We are the Nation’s leading independent manufacturer of plant-based proteins and dairy-free cheeses. Our range of 35+ products can be found in more than 25,000 grocery stores throughout North America, the UK and Australia. We’re on a mission to erase the myth that people have to make a choice between enjoying tasty food or taking care of themselves and the planet. We can do both.

Tofurky is looking for a Food Scientist (level II) to join our team. As a mid-career food scientist with a few years of experience, you will use your knowledge of biology, chemistry, or material science to assist our team with new product development and with formulating products from scratch, and with developing product quality metrics and processing procedures. You have the experience working on multiple products and projects at once, and love to design bench and pilot trials with our partners.

What you’ll do:

The Food Scientist II will be responsible for helping to assess and develop products for flavor, nutritional value, texture, and appearance. Your responsibilities will range from analysis and selection of raw ingredients to integrity and quality of finished goods. Keeping food safety and quality in mind, you’ll assist with formulations, R&D batch scale-ups, writing of SOPs, shelf-life testing and running process validations. In this role you will also be well-versed in nutritional labeling regulations and be able to use the nutritional software to generate required packaging information for the company that includes product specifications for raw materials and finished products.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop product formulas, product quality metrics, processing procedures, and raw material specifications to support company goals.
  • Design and conduct bench experiments, pilot trials, and assist with co-manufacture plant trials for new and existing products. Analyze test results and offer recommendations for further product/process development and improvement.
  • Work with suppliers and vendors to evaluate functional ingredients and develop processes to optimize texture, flavor, and appearance of plant-based meat and/ or dairy products.
  • Design and conduct shelf life, sensory, and product quality tests.
  • Provide technical support to sales and marketing teams, such as creating product prototypes for special events and generating product technical and nutritional data sheets.
  • Support and reinforce all food safety initiatives by using your knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP principles.

What skills and education you’ll need:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials of Science, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years’ of combined education and/or experience in food product development.
  • Experience developing recipes and formulations from scratch for a wide range of food products. Specific knowledge in the field of plant-based meat/dairy is a plus.
  • Technical knowledge of ingredient functionality (proteins, hydrocolloids, flavors, fats, etc.) and ingredient interactions.
  • Understanding of product-process interaction and how to adapt processes and ingredient selection to fit the manufacturing process is a plus.
  • Self-starter and independent thinker who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, managing projects, and collaboration to create/commercialize multiple products under tight timelines.

What we’ll do:

We know you’re valuable and we’ll work hard to keep you challenged. You’ll have an opportunity to work in our new manufacturing facility built to LEED standards located on the waterfront in beautiful Hood River, OR. The qualified candidate will receive:

  • Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
  • 100% employer paid comprehensive medical and vision, 80% employer paid dental benefits.
  • Auto-enrollment in Tofurky profit sharing program and eligibility for 401K contribution + match.
  • Employer paid Term Life Insurance, Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance.
  • Company paid Personal Time Off and Holiday time.

At Tofurky, we don’t all have exactly the same beliefs about diet, sustainability, or what goes best with french fries. We’re not a monoculture (and we like it that way). But we can all get behind our mission of respect: whether it’s respect for our shared planet, for all species, for human health, or for our community and workforce.
