This role covers a large territory which will include North Western Iowa, Northern Nebraska, South West Minnesota, South and North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. The role will include a company car, and the travel will generally include 3 overnight trips per month.

The members served include both Commercial Agribusiness and Large Farms.

This role can be filled at an alternate level depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The compensation grade for this role is G4.

Job Description Summary

Our agribusiness risk management team is an integral part of our organization. We develop relationships with customers, perform survey work to look at property and casualty exposures and recommend improvements that decrease risk. Through collaboration we share our knowledge and expertise across Nationwide to enhance our agriculture insurance lines and their market position.



With moderate supervision, this role provides consultation and training related to the development of safety and quality assurance programs that middle market agribusiness, large farm operations and food clients expect from their insurance provider. Will participate in clients’ risk management decision making process and partner with clients to develop customized service plans to meet their safety, quality assurance and regulatory needs and expectations. Will personally conduct training for clients and will coordinate services with other internal risk management professionals to fulfill service agreements. Will conduct risk management related presentations during commercial client, farm client and agency focused seminars.

Position will work in close partnership with Underwriting. Conducts risk assessments of clients’ operations to identify exposures and controls associated with property and casualty insurance coverage. Consults with Underwriting on ongoing basis to keep them informed on effect services have on improving clients’ safety programs and on clients’ overall insurability.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Researches client business history, loss history, industry and technical information to prepare for consultations, risk assessments and presentations. Researches safety industry to stay current on safety and risk management techniques and innovations. Will research industry specific risk management issues to assist in development of new training programs. Uses internal and external resources to conduct research.
  • Analyzes loss exposures and effectiveness of controls in place to mitigate them. Analyzes industry and client historical loss information for patterns or inherent loss, uses analysis to assist in service plan development. Analyzes effect various loss mitigation techniques will have on controlling exposures. Communicates potential loss mitigation techniques and/or services to customers that will enable them to enhance their safety and risk management programs.
  • Completes assigned tasks based on established time and service standards. Workflow involves developing service plans for middle market commercial clients, large farm operations and food clients then personally delivering the services or training programs and/or coordinating services with subject matter experts, property engineers and risk management consultants. Workflow is based and prioritized on client analysis and service needs. Risk assessments will also be conducted on clients as assigned.
  • Serve as part of clients’ safety and risk management decision-making team or process. Provides client advice on safety and quality assurance programs and procedures to implement or enhance. Provides advice on programs to implement and to meet OSHA, DOT and Food Safety regulations. Advises clients on risk management services to utilize based on loss analysis. Determines appropriate use of internal expertise and resources to help clients improve their property and casualty risk management programs. Advises Underwriting on risk insurability, pricing and coverage.
  • Manages travel and personal workload. Plans consultation meetings, training presentations and risk assessments with clients. Plans consultation meetings with Underwriting and producers.
  • Consults with clients and Underwriting on risk exposures, loss frequency and severity trends and loss mitigation techniques and/or enhancements needed to improve clients’ safety and quality assurance programs. Conducts ongoing consultation with Underwriting on the effectiveness of services provided in helping clients rehabilitate their safety and risk management programs. Serves as expert on safety and quality assurance-related topics.
  • Communicates Risk Management service capabilities to prospective clients. Services have major impact on business acquisition. Develops service plan with clients and communicates services planned and provided to Underwriting and producers. Conducts safety and quality assurance training presentations for clients. Will develop customized PowerPoint presentations. Creates comprehensive technical reports and recommendations that address the hazards and controls associated with client’s business, insurance needs and coverage.
  • Serves as a professional consultant and trainer for an assigned portfolio of clients. Participates in clients’ risk management decision-making. Works in partnership with middle market agribusiness, large farm operations and food clients to meet their safety and quality assurance consulting and training expectations. This partnership has major impact on client retention. Maintains an ongoing relationship with Underwriting. Works with clients whose safety programs are often in need of rehabilitation. Advises Underwriting on clients’ progression in the development of their safety and quality assurance programs.
  • Participates in training classes, department and company meetings. Participates in external safety and industry-specific training classes to stay current on latest safety and industry related innovations. Assists in the creation of a personal development plan with direct supervisor and is accountable for personal progress.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships : Reports to manager. Does not have direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Prefer bachelor's studies or higher in safety, science, EH&S, agriculture, other applicable fields as related to the job summary.

License/Certification/Designation: Licenses: Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or State licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate may be ineligible to continue in the position. Designations: Prefer one of the following designations or area of specialization, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS) Associate of Risk Management (ARM), Agronomy, LP Gas, Fleet Safety, Food Safety/Quality Assurance, etc.

Experience: Four to eight years’ professional experience in agribusiness safety, food safety, transportation safety, EH&S consulting, risk management consulting or related field preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Advanced knowledge of safety and risk management practices and principles and loss mitigation techniques associated with middle market agribusiness, large farm operations and food industries. In-depth knowledge of key industries or lines of coverage critical to assigned territory. Knowledge of federal regulations: OSHA, EPA, FDA. Understanding of insurance mechanism. Knowledge of commercial insurance coverage. Should have in depth knowledge of key industry and coverage specific risk management concerns associated with geographic territory. Will receive extensive training and be expected to quickly obtain working knowledge of all occupational health and safety programs and services offered to our clients. This will include: OSHA regulations, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, DOT regulations, defensive driving, hazmat transportation, agronomy (custom application, NH3 handling), LP Gas (CETP), food safety, quality assurance (FSMA, HACCP) and farm safety. Advanced presentation, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to teach loss mitigation techniques associated with worker’s compensation, general liability, product liability and fleet exposures. Understanding of risk management issues, loss drivers and risk controls associated with middle market agribusiness and food industries. Must possess desire to learn, grow and develop as a safety and risk management professional. Interpersonal skills to interact with clients, leadership, underwriting and peers. Ability to prioritize work/time, Ability to operate a personal computer and learn applicable systems.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions : May require frequent and overnight travel. Must be able to conduct physical surveys inspections. Must be able to climb, stoop, bend, balance on various heights, crawl and lift up to 50 lbs. May require relocation. This is a field-based position. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards.
