The Associate Food Scientist will conduct technical assessment of flavor, nutritional value, texture, and appearance, and contribute to product development and renovation projects. This individual will identify, document, and validate raw ingredients that meet product standards and requirements, including product costs, quality, safety, and uniformity.

Tofurky is looking for an Associate Food Scientist to join our team. The Associate Food Scientist will assist the R&D team with product development and formulation, including bench and pilot trials, as well as tracking product quality metrics and processing procedures. An ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of relevant experience, a background in biology, chemistry, material science, or a related field, and most importantly, passion for developing new and improving existing plant-based products.

What you’ll do: The Associate Food Scientist will conduct technical assessment of flavor, nutritional value, texture, and appearance, and contribute to product development and renovation projects. This individual will identify, document, and validate raw ingredients that meet product standards and requirements, including product costs, quality, safety, and uniformity. The Associate Food Scientist will also assist with food-formulation, R&D batch scale-ups, process documentation, and shelf-life testing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with developing product formulas, tracking product quality metrics and processing procedures to support company
  • Carry out bench experiments, pilot trials, and assist with partner plant trials for new and existing
  • Carry out shelf life, sensory, and product quality tests; analyze test results and offer recommendations for further product/process development and
  • Work with suppliers and vendors to evaluate functional ingredients and to assist with the development processes to optimize texture, flavor, and appearance of plant-based meat and/or plant-based dairy
  • Provide technical support to sales and marketing teams, such as creating product prototypes for special events and generating product technical and nutritional data
  • Keep up to date on nutritional labeling regulations and use industry standard tools to appropriately label raw and finished products
  • Support and reinforce all food safety initiatives by using your knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP

What skills and education you’ll need:

  • BS in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field, Certified Food Scientist (CFS certificate) or related
  • 1- 2 years of product development experience in industry or academia.
  • Practical experiencedevelopingrecipesand productformulations
  • Understanding of product-process interactions and how to adapt processes and ingredient selection to fit the manufacturing process is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of ingredient functionality (proteins, hydrocolloids, flavors, fats, ) and ingredient interactions.
  • Curious and independent thinker with a passion for plant-based food
