Laboratory Technologist - Robinson, IL 62454

Summary:

 

The Hershey Company Robinson plant is a non-union plant producing products such as PayDay, Heath, Skor, Milk Duds, Whoppers, Reese’s Pieces in a high-speed complex environment.

 

The Technologist Laboratory will be responsible for performing microbiological product and environmental testing, managing sampling program and assuring compliance to Product Quality and Environmental Microbiological Monitoring Programs.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Conduct routine and non-routine analysis of in-process materials, raw materials, environmental samples, finished goods, or stability samples.
  • Complete documentation needed to support testing procedures including data capture forms, equipment, log books, or inventory forms.
  • Interpret test results, compare them to established specifications and control limits, and communication of results.
  • Make routine decisions related to product quality and safety.
  • Performs non-routine work operating complex equipment.
  • Manages the plant EMMP (Environmental Microbiological Monitoring Program) for product zones, non-product zones, and finished product testing.
  • Validates the effectiveness of cleaning procedures utilizing microbiological testing.
  • Manages the microbiological potable water testing.
  • Coordinates lab workflow and collaborates with QA Specialists on a coverage basis if needed.
  • Educates and trains the workforce on microbiological food quality and safety issues.
  • Reviews, revises, and develops the microbiological Product Excellence Program (PEP)/ISO 17025 documents for the Robinson Plant.
  • Investigates and analyzes microbiological incidents, takes corrective action and/or makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Supports the Process Operating Guide (POG) Program within the plant.
  • Performs quality system audit activities as necessary which may include internal or external customers.
  • Operates/troubleshoots complex lab equipment and responds to equipment malfunctions.
  • Participates in collaborative studies to maintain lab procedure knowledge.
  • Functions as plant microbiological representative on non-routine activities associated with project/team assignments which may include specification development, quality design support, new product start-ups, training, instrument evaluation or method development, etc.

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

 

Special work hour or assignment requirements:

  • Although primarily a "day-shift" position, must be flexible with work hours, including some weekend work.

Key working relationships that must be developed or maintained:

  • This role reports to the Food Safety Compliance Specialist
  • Team working relationship with operations group leader/supervisors and maintenance supervisors.

Technology:

  • Microsoft Office Software Products Experience
  • SAP Quality & LIMS Experience (preferred)

  • Strong computer and document management skills with attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with all levels to deliver timely results
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to influence management enabling the direction of activities of teams of employees that do not have direct reporting to this role
  • Ability to interact effectively with 3rd party and internal auditors

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

 

  • B.S. in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field preferred
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of federal and state food industry regulations
  • Understanding of sanitation practices
  • Strong auditing / assessment skills
  • Knowledge of manufacturing operations
  • Familiarity with HACCP/FSMA Preventive Controls
  • Familiarity with GFSI standards desired
